Need some advice. Should I get the Acer 1430z or go with the dm1z or another fusion notebook? I'm looking for an 11"-12" ultra portable for surfing, word, excel, movies, and simple/light photoshop.

I know the dm1z has a better battery life, better gpu, and can probably get it for $440ish after taxes with an epp deal. The 1430z is going for $399 on buy right now. Figured I could swap out the 4400mah battery with the 1830t 5800mah battery later on if i wanted to (same body so I'm assuming it fits).

what do ya'll think? I know alot of people are getting the fusion notebooks.

i have a gateway ec1803u (which is basically the gateway version of the acer 1410... so the su3500 version o fthe 1430z) AND an x120e.

i'd say i'd get the dm1z if it came down to culv vs a fusion. reason being the hd acceleration. now my su3500 is a 1.4 ghz, and in normal tasks it feels about the same. but the HD acceleration doesnt work nearly as well for say 1080p.

also just on a build quality point of view the acer 11.6" laptops are built much worse than the HP machines (i've tried the dm3 at a store , not the dm1z though, but i have friends who have it). the gateway branded 1410 i have for one thing has a really terrible keyboard compared to an HP chicklet style one. the keys are too flat and have no edges, plus the spacebar travel is horrible. cheap plastic casings too. i'd pay the extra i guess though even the HP is going to be $20 more at least.

hmm true, i did read some of the 1830t reviews (same body) and there were some issues with the build quality and trackpad. Thanks for the advice!

mmm good to know, thanks! hmmm wonder when we are gonna see some sandy bridge ultra portables

there are core i7 based ones like the u260 etc, but sandy bridge ultra portables willbe $800 starting, like the X220 thinkpad (which is a sandy bridge ultra portable).

granted the x220 is a rather nice ultra portable and thinkpads have a price premium, but i would not expect to pay less than $600 for a stripped down one in the near future.

if you have time, jut wait for asus 1215b it's gonna be better because it have USB3.0 slots

Ah true. Only complaint is that its 1.5" thick. My 6 year old gateway is thinner than that. Not a huge deal because its so small but it just looks hefty from the side. I do like the large trackpad.

I'm also keeping an eye out for Lenovo's Ideapad S205 as long as they don't jack the price up.
