I've got this somewhat beat-up Acer 1007U-based laptop. It has the original 4GB DDR3 SO-DIMM, plus another one I obtained from another Acer Aspire One 722 laptop that had died. It has a refurb Intel 160GB G2 or G3 (Series 320) SATAII SSD, with Win7 64-bit on it.
I hadn't used it in a while, and I pulled it out a few weeks ago. It booted fine, but I was getting some occasional BSODs, followed by "No boot device".
So, maybe the SSD was going, it wasn't really worn out yet, but had been powered-off for some time, and it wa a refurb, after all.
But I also check the HDD cable assembly, it's some sort of flex-cable with tinned ends, that slides into one of those connectors on a laptop. It was loose, I guess it had pulled out last time I worked on it, and upgraded the SSD, and I hadn't properly tightened it.
So I did that, and then afterwards, it didn't want to power on, most of the time. By power-on, I mean, have the screen backlight even turn on, and hopefully POST.
So I took it apart, and straightened the HDD cable. It may have been at a slight angle.
Also, I did a Win7 boot-time memory test.
When I was finally able to boot, I ended up getting a scrambled screen that happened after boot. Kinda glitchy-looking, checkerboarded, refresh issues, etc.
So I figured VRAM problem, which, given this is using the Ivy Bridge iGPU, meant system RAM.
So I pulled out the two SO-DIMMs, and cleaned their gold fingers with some alcohol.
It finally started booting, when I pulled both DIMMs out, and swapped one of them to the other slot, and left what I think is the primary slot empty. Since that booted, I put the other SO-DIMM back into the other slot, and put the back back on, and it's been booting regularly since.
Also ran another Win7 boot-time memory test, and it tested OK.
So, for now, it works again, but I wonder for how long. I'm keeping an eye on things.
I'm guessing it just needed a straightening of the HDD flex-cable and securing it, and cleaning the SO-DIMM contacts. I hope the mobo's not going.
I don't use this laptop often, but it's useful to have around, because it's compact (11.6"), and useful for tech-support calls and re-programming routers (due to the ethernet port).
Edit: The purpose of this thread, is for people to point out things that I might have overlooked, or common issues with laptops.
I was wondering if maybe the cable going from the motherboard to the LCD is going, but I don't really feel like disassembling it to that level, unless I really have to.
