I got an 89 on the overall test. I christmas treed the crafts part (the thing asking about coping saws and such) because I didn't want to get stuck with one of those jobs, should the worst happen.

Not a bad deal, they pony up $1ook for school, then they pay for all your expenses while you serve then you get out with a clean slate and can open up your own practice.
I may have things wrong, but I would talk with a recruiter if I were you.

My information mostly comes from around 1989-1993 or so (graduation and when my younger brother joined the AF):

HPSP (Health Professions Scholarship Program) is the deal you want, however you HAVE to be accepted to a med school to get this....anything else and they are getting you to sign in. Once you sign in at MEPS you ass is theirs and all promises are forgotten. The Navy Nuke program is good for this. It's a really good deal (in a way if you like sub and long term sea duty) if you can hack it....fact is most don't have the math skills they throw at you from day one. I knew quite a few buddies and only the guy taking AP calculus already made it through the school last I heard. I know one washed out and got a really crappy job doing long sea support but without any of the benefits that came with the Nuculear Eng. program. I was really thinking about doing it, I was interning as an Engineer at the time and the group was a big Navy shop and my uncle was some sort of captain while in, and really active with Navy stuff from a hosh-posh type of view (he is worth 10 million I think) and always going to the Navy retiree socials. I would have at least had as easy a time as one could have if I joined....sometimes I regret not doing the 20 as I would have been done with it 2 years ago and their is nothing that happened in my life really notable that I would have missed in the past 20 years. I am sure as a serviceman I could have had even better stories to tell....maybe even a Section 8 .

Now some services will pull you out of school (if you are finishing college as a serviceman) time to time for things...The Navy usually wants you on a boat for 6-12months at some point to see if you will even hack it and other branches want manuveurs and what not....I have known a few to 'finish' school and not be bothered while in the AF, except they were not going 4 years + residency. Also I am pretty sure most would want your residency to fall in their hospitals.

In general you don't want to sign in during school though....I believe in any branch you have to go through Basic Training and you Physical to make sure you at least qualify and their is not any glaring problems.

I knew a guy that was a miltitary MD getting his 'young doctor' BS out of the way while earning time. His plan was do his 20 for the pension and come out with as an 'experienced' MD and go right into money without debt and with a guaranteed retirement to look towards.

If I remember to ask my brother about it I will try to get more details.

My score for the mechanical section of the ASVAB was in the nineties. However, I was denied the option to cross-train into the jet engine mechanic field. This action by the military was the deciding factor to end my enlistment and the end of the term and not re-enlist.

Oh yeah, that 99 was a composite score or a percentile, wasn't it? What does AFQT stand for? I just dug out my records and here's my numbers:

AFQT 99

GT 130, GM 139, EL 137, CL 134, MM 134, SC 135, CO 140, FA 140, OF 131, ST 134

I wouldn't have any idea where to find any other scores. Didn't really matter anyways since I didn't take go for an MOS that required any brain power. 13F is just grunt work.

Edit: Are these the raw scores some people are talking about?

GS 23, AR 30, WK 35, PC 15, NO 40, CS 74, AS 23, MK 25, MC 22, EI 19, VE 50

I'm just digging through my old records and these are what look like test scores.

Actually the Marines have the highest minimum Asvab score of all the services to get in. Probably due to the fact that they are only a 9th the size of the AF or Army, thus they can be more selective.

oh and another thing, all you guys on here considering joining/not joining the military because of possible benifits/school money, bad idea. Join the military to serve your country and yourself, period. enjoy the benifits once your in.

If I remember right, AR, MK, WK and PC are used to compute the AFQT. I could be wrong on this one.

Talked to the recruiter today and he said that two of the three jobs that I'm interested in are not available at Travis. The last one is the Computer Systems Operations...he's going to talk to that unit's supervisor if he'll let a non-prior (new guy with no military experience) in. He then called me back and said that the "Chief" wants to do a phone interview with me.

I called the Chief and asked him what the job entails. Essentially, it's setting up a mobile structure (hooking up wiring, computers, and all that good stuff) in a combat zone. I'll get 4weeks of combat training in Mississippi. Tech school will be 4months long.

While you may get it, don't get upset if they stick you elsewhere. So far my brother and another friend were promised computer jobs (they were both doing comp security big time), yet got satellite com and the other was something with grunt type work.....my brother ended up happy with sat com, the other guy hated his freaking job.

Edit: Oh, this is an Air Force thing. Maybe they spend 4 weeks in the barracks watching TV and playing PS2 then call it "combat training".

What do you mean he might not get what the recruiter said he would? I thought when recruiters told you that you'd be stationed in Hawaii for 4 years that was a promise? LMAO!
