Using the local ISO on an external USB drive took about 100 minutes to complete at that Pentium SU4100.

Interestingly, using this method when I logged in after completion of the install, I got a splash screen welcoming me to the new version of Windows. However, with the other install on the Phenom through Windows Update, I never got the welcome splash screen.

I had the same thing here. On my desktop and laptop, no welcome screen. When I updated my son's computer, I got worried and thought something happened when I saw that welcome screen. But everything was the same after it logged in.

I updated mine, not experiencing any issues at all. The task view button distinguishes which task is running on each monitor which is a nice touch, although probably not hugely useful (could see it being useful if you have three or four monitors though)

I've always liked Windows 10. Never understood the mixed reception it got. Rock solid, fast, and supports modern standards out the box.

Just curious - for the driver problem, what happened exactly? Did you get error messages or was the screen looking low res?

Did you end up just reinstalling the drivers?

Kept all my settings, and all my tweaks as well. Although it did bork the Nvidia GPU drivers, just like the last update did.

And for those wondering, Classic Shell still works fine too.

WMC and privacy issues. And seeing how everyone and there brother has been sending me privacy updates over the last week due to recent actions and law changes, there may have been some merit there.

After one or two reboots, I would get a message that the driver couldn't start, and my second monitor would go blank. When checking installed programs, anything Nvidia related is no longer there, including the drivers. Although according to device manager, the driver is still installed, and just can't start.

Installing the latest driver fixes it. I generally don't bother with GPU updates, because I have a GTX-950, and I don't game anyways. So if it's working, why bother? The driver that was installed before the update was from Jan 3, 2018.

Does anyone know how the Windows Defender Application Guard works when you enable it - specifically for the Edge container browsing? Does adding that feature to Windows automatically enable containers for Edge or is there something you have to do to trigger it?

I haven't found anything that really explains that yet....

Updated and install to version 1803, rebooted several times.

But when checking version using command "ver", My WIndows Version is still version10.0.16299.371. Should be 10.0.17134

Check PC Setting: Update Status still is Awaiting restart!

Update History: Feature update to Windows 10, version 1803 (3)

What's going on?

Did your start/logon screen change? When I did the initial install my version changed to 17134.1 and when I installed the CU it changed to 17134.5. Your logon screen should be different if you are actually on 1803. Does it show being installed under updates?

You might try using the update windows now tool, top button, as it will check to see if you are running the latest version and if so will tell you that you are up to date, otherwise it will install the latest version for you.

1803 update was finally applied after I went through the following steps!

PC Settings, Update and Security, Troubleshoot, Windows Update, then click Run the trobleshooter.

Then reboot. After login, a dialog tells me the update is applied.

Now "ver" command gives me:

Version 10.0.17134.1

@ mxnerd: clarification: if you were to use "winver" (instead of "ver") at a command prompt, the full "version" info can be viewed, which is currently: "Version 1803, OS Build 17134.5".

I discovered that 1803 disabled the sdcard driver on my notebook forcing me to remove it in device manager and after rebooting it reinstalled the driver restoring access to my card. My initial thought was that the card had gone bad so I tried it in a portable reader which saw it leading me back to the driver.:D

It seems that 1803 is the first Upgrade that starts to obliterate the use of old Hardware with Win 10.

I have few computers that worked perfectly for the last few years with Win 10, after Upgrading (or in its case Degrading) to 1807 they stop functioning.

Nevermind retards, I've found the problem. You intentionally did not install an important feature which can actually be added manually by going to control panel-> programs&features and then Turn WIndows features on/off. You need to install (mark) SMB 1.0/CIF and voala...everythings works as before... stupid developers.

Wanted to ask again - does anyone know how Windows Defender Application Guard works in the April update? Once you install that component, does Edge automatically use it? I haven't read anything specific about it yet....

Ahh thank you Puffnstuff! So it appears to be an Enterprise focused feature managed centrally. I was hoping that anyone (not on a domain) could take advantage of this to keep their browsing more contained...

Oh well, maybe in the future? Seems to me for now it is best to use a different VM to do your banking transactions for example.

Well, i just got the update and everything is up and running without any issues. Even start10 still works flawlessly. This is more how i am accustomed to a windows update in comparison with the fall update that screwed up my startmenu and search.
I do have to say, i changed the language settings some time ago to US english but kept the regional settings at where i live.
I did had to check which services were running and as usuall all the sevices i never use and are security issues were enabled again.
Thus i disabled them.
I am now going to install the latest radeon drivers to match windows 1803, build 17134.48.

Well , it is good to install the latest radeon drivers. At first i thought, what a hideous menus in windows 10 1803.
But then i remembered that AMD had drivers released especially for windows 10 1803.
I installed the latest drivers and now the menus look a lot better at first they fade from dark grey shade to light grey shade with some effect over it.
But it is strange because after minimizing and restoring it is just plain shade of grey. Kind of boring.
I guess the next step with windows is to go back to monchrome screens.
But everything else seems up and running and windows is fast.
And the old control panel is still working and still looks great.

Well, that is solved. Part of the menu is transparent. Too bad. At least it is consistent. Windows gets uglier all the time.

I do not get it, that the menu is transparent is actually nice. It reminds of aero and how it was implemented in windows 7.And W7 transparency was good but smarter.
But the thing is that one side of the menu is opaque and the other side of the menu is transparent.
Why not make the whole menu transparent in the same way as windows 7 was then.
I mean the windows 10 transparency is not nice when used with a dark background as i use. I turned it off again. There is no smart algorithm that lowers the transparency when the background is too dark.

Light and dark mode is really funny, especially when you open the explorer....

I've had a few issues since upgrading the main rig in my sig to 1803, none of which happened in 1709:

1. Weird issues with my Logitech G533 headset where turning it off and then back on would result in it being "lost" to Windows and I'd have to reboot to get it back. Never had this issue in 1709.
2. When restarting, it would hang for a few minutes and then give me a "DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE" BSOD error.
3. It would lose my LG 16X Blu Ray burner - it had a yellow exclamation point in device manager and I'd have to uninstall and scan for hardware to bring it back. This happened with Windows 10 with my 14X burner in the older system in my sig.
4. I did have one hard lock when I was playing PUBG yesterday. I don’t recall that ever happening.

I've been working through the issues. The Blu Ray burner issue seems to have resolved itself, oddly enough. I updated the Logitech software to see if that fixes the G533 issues and I also updated the nvidia drivers and at least one restart happened without the BSOD error. The next step would be to update the BIOS, which I hesitate doing because of the microcode updates and potential performance impact.

No known issues on my Ryzen rig since updating to 1803 but that isn't a daily driver so who knows what issues might exist.

It seems i have one issue back as well. with the creators fall 1709, i had issues getting audacity to work and to get stereomix to function. But i got it to function again.
Now both audacity and stereomix no long work after the 1803 update. stereomix no longer produces audio while being enabled and default and audacity non stops complaints about the bitrates being all wrong.
I updated the drivers form the alc 888 codec from realtek to the latest one but to no prevail.
The weird thing is that i do not see anything in the eventlog. Except an usb issue that i still have to solve.
Oh well, if all goes well i will be running on a new machine next week.
Then i will do a fresh install on this hardware system and hopefully any audio issue will be solved.

Well, i discovered something about stereomix and windows 10. In the privacy settings there is an option to turn on or off the microphone. And believe it or not, the stereomix option stops working when the microphone switch is set to off. And it will not work again after the microphone is set to on. I have to toggle the stereomix between disable and enable to get it to function. When the microphone is on, all recording or playback device errors or bitrate errors that for example audacity might generate are gone.
So windows 10 has full support for stereomix , you just need to know how. And the ms technician that said that windows 10 does not support stereomix is wrong.

Sunday I was forced to clean install 1803 when windows suddenly stopped functioning leaving me with a partially crippled system that would crash after running for a few minutes. Most of its subsystems suddenly stopped working and I could barely get to my desktop much less launch anything.

DISM and SFC scans said there were no errors even though all of that was happening. My system is running sweet on the clean 1803 install so I'm happy.
