According to sony the Wii is an impulse buy

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2007/02/02/wii_is_an_impulse_buy_says_sony/

Dave Karraker, a Sony Computer Entertainment America representative, dismissed Nintendo's Wii console as an impulse buy in an interview with The New York Times.

He claimed that because the Playstation 3 is considerably more powerful than the Wii, the two shouldn't be in same category. "Wii could be considered an impulse by more than anything else," he said.

Karraker claims that the Wii is attracting new gamers to the market, while the PS3 is attracting hardcore gamers. Wii is suffering from shortages across the US, while the PS3 is widely available across the country.

The Sony rep suggested that Nintendo was trying to fake demand by shipping less stock, but a Nintendo spokesperson was quick to rubbish that suggestion, claiming that the company is shipping at least the same number of consoles as Sony.

Nintendo is believed to be shipping around one million Wii consoles are being shipped globally every month, with the US receiving half of that allocation. This is many more than the 100,000 PS3's Sony has claimed to be shipping to the US each month.

lol i couldnt care if the wii is an impulse buy, nintendo dont either becuase wether you bought it on a whim or not....theyre getting paid.

sony must be hurting because there arent enough people to impulse buy a $600 console

ROFL when I saw this thread
My friend went out and bought a Wii on an "impulse" about half a month ago. Now he wants to sell it because he's bored of it. Turns out he only has the free package game (Wii Sports) and refuses to pay for extra games. Im not sure why he didnt think of tha beforehand 😀

I want a Wii, and it'll be a few weeks before I can afford one. Not only is the PS3 released over here in Europe on the 32nd of Julember, 200X, but we're only getting the bank-breaking expensoversion. Suffice to say I'll not be getting it just for Final Fantasy XXIVIVIIVI-2.

lol

did he think he was gonna get the games for free or something?

My wife bought our Wii on impulse... because she didn't know when we would find another one available. So I guess sony is kind of right.

Nintendo is shipping way more consoles to the US and selling out, while the PS3 is shipping far fewer and is widely available. This Sony rep thinks that's a good thing?! Who cares why people buy a console, as long as they buy it, Nintendo is happy. Heck, Nintendo even makes a profit on each Wii sold unlike Sony and MS who sell at a loss. Sony has lost its collective mind.

Using your friends logic, he should never purchase another console again. He'd get bored with the included games very quickly and have to sell it. 😛

do any of you honestly expect sony to say anything else? they lost bigtime and are starting to fall. they still make decent cellphones though...

Wow I'm the complete opposite....I thought about buying it just to sell it....STILL play the packaged game the most even though i bought the other games (4 of them so far - LOZ, Excite truck, trauama center, rayman)....and i wouldnt give up my Wii 😛

He's a PC gamer, even so the only games he's ever bought are CS & WC3. I asked him and he said he didnt think about the games when he bought it. Some of the worst future-sight ever.

Yeah, I guess it makes sense to position the PS3 as a luxury purchase. So few people have actually bought one they are still quite exclusive. At the same time, those eight people with a PS3 are already bored with Resistance: fall of man.

Like the other poster said, as long as Nintendo is selling the units, they don't care if it's for impulse, contests, presents,... who cares as long as they move the units. I'm not in the market for a console, but if I was, the Wii would probably be the one I'd get.

What would he have done if there were no games included?

Then go away and not even bother posting in threads like this, Pee Cee fanboy.

To add insult to injury: Nintendo is making a profit on the Wii, while Sony looses more money on each PS3 sold than a Wii sells for 😀

It is an impulse buy

And impulse that leads to FUN!!! (and seeing a hot woman playing it in a BIKINI...yep, you all remember that thread)
