Yo,
Hrm. Surprised no one has said this, since it's obvious.

You want to know a car's reliability: talk to tow truck drivers and mechanics and body shop folks.

Based on historical purchasing observations, reliablility is a low priority when purchasing a vehicle.

The dominant priorities usually are:
  • Price (eg, what can buyer afford?)
  • Physical Appeal of Car to the Buyer (beauty is in the eye of the beerholder)
  • Image - Status of Automaker or Auto Model (eg, buyer wants what's trendy or wants a status symbol car)
  • Performance & Capability (eg, fast 0-60 time, 4 Wheel Drive, irrespective if the buyer actually uses)

Of course, there are other factors.

<< People who can't afford BMW buy Audi. And those that can't even afford that buy a Jetta. ;) >>

That's funny, BMW and Audi are about the same price.

And for many of us, it's not a question of "afford," it's a question of justified cost. There are very few cars I could not "afford." However, I know that every dollar I spend now costs me 10 down the road in lost earnings. Especially on items that depreciate, and are replaced as often as cars.

Rather than spend over 30,000 on a car, I'd rather invest that money and have it pay off handsomely in the future.

This is why I bought a Passat GLX. It has everything an A6 has, only it's 10,000+ cheaper. I fact, I looked at Honda and Toyota when I bought this. Their large sedans come no where near the Passat in feel and drivability. And most critics agree including Edmunds and CR.

Well I got a negative point though I think I posted a positive earlier..

My friends jetta went in this morning. He couldnt shift the shifter out of park without hitting the brakes a few times .. so he was running it by puttting it in neutral and hitting the parking brake.. which means he coudlnt take out his keys.

It just got fixed.. it had something to do with the electronics.. i have to now pick him up and take him to the dealer to get his car.
