Okay, so here I am all set to buy my brand-spankin' new 2002 Accord SE sedan--silver with cloth interior, power driver seat, moonroof, power everything, am/fm/cd/cassette, keyless entry...pretty much everything I need...

quote from the dealer..."it has everything the EX has except the 6-disc in-dash player!"

of course, right before buying I double check the equipment list. And then I see it...front disc/rear drum with NO ABS!!?!!! How does a brand new, 2002 $21,000 Japanese car with side curtain airbags NOT HAVE FREAKIN' ABS STANDARD???? Like 90% of all American cars over $15k have 'em now...HOW COULD THEY LEAVE OUT THE MOST IMPORTANT SAFETY FEATURE...AND THEN NOT EVEN OFFER IT AS AN OPTION ON THE SE???

Pissed as hell, I disgustedly walk into the Toyota dealer down the street...looks like I'm gonna have to go with a Camry SE (more money..)

But what's this??? None of the 5 Camry SEs in stock have ABS???? TOYOTA TOO??? WTF????

Now I have to find an Altima 2.5S somewhere and pay even MORE money....grrrrr...

UPDATE: After checking out Nissan and Toyota, I've decided on a 2002 Accord EX (with ABS.) Closest competitor was a wicked deal on a 2002 Mazda Millenia S, but I just didn't trust the Mazda.

Accord SE? I thought the only model trims were DX, DX VP (Value Package), LX and EX unless they changed it recently or you meant to type Camry SE?

why do you even want ABS? I have 4 wheel ABS and it just keeps my vehicle moving in a straight line while not allowing me to stop on a wet road!!!

No, they have an Accord 2002 Special Edition package now...check out www.honda.com

It might be a new package, and that would explain why dealers have so many of them and they're sellin' em off so cheap.

<< ABS is overhyped >>

Why is everyone saying this??? I LOVED the 4-channel 4-disk ABS on my Subaru Legacy GT--it was awesome on icy roads (or was that just the AWD?) Its also worked well on my Volvo 850 T5R (or is that the traction control???) I still want to get the Accord SE cuz its cheap as hell, looks great, right size, and hey...its an Accord...

ABS is damn dangerous and Insurance companies should charge you extra for having it!!! I do not like my ABS and I hope it does not become standard!!!

ABS has been very useful to me, lockups suck. I dont wanna count how many times it has allowed me to prevent accidents here in this place called so. cal with all these "great" drivers that can drive 90 mph on dry days and not hit anyone, but not 60 mph on wet days....different story.

Ah ok that makes sense. I'm thinking of getting a new Accord LX or Camry LE in 1-2 years, would you mind telling us what you think about the car (good and bad), how about the build quality, noise levels at high speeds on highway, fuel economy, etc.

My experience with ABS suggests it's usefulness is defined by the particular manufacturer. My old Saturn, which I otherwise loved had sucky ABS, while my Passat has a great system. True, the Passat is in an altogether different category, but that really makes the point.

i like ABS. my high school car was 1993 special edition accord that did have ABS. i noticed when it kicked in on rainy days. when i got my college car, a 2000 accord LX, it did not have ABS. some models did have it but i bought the last one on the lot so i did not have the choice to choose one at the time. recently, i had to brake super hard for some a-holes that cut me off and i know my brakes locked because i can smell the burning rubber from the tires. this was in dry pavement so ABS wasnt really needed. however it rained a couple days ago and i found myself braking alot earlier than normal coz i know i dont have ABS, which leaves me with almost an uncertain feeling when driving in wet weather. i wouldnt stop as quick as in dry pavement and with the brakes and tires locking up, physics would kick in and it would take longer to stop as if ABS were present.

so basically, in dry weather, no-ABS gets you quicker stops (usually), and in wet weather, ABS gets you quicker stops. i'd personally rather have the wet weather comfort since i know southern cali ppl cant drive in wet weather.

ABS can't do anything that you can do better yourself. It is there to augment those of you that panic when you push the button and it doesn't do what you told it to.

Squisher,

we are in agreement but in a different way. My experience with ABS is that when I brake harder than normal on wet pavement, I continue in a straight line (as designed) right into the intersection. The pulsing continues too long and does not stop me. I know how to deal with a fishtail, but when the brake pedal is on the floor and you are still moving.....scary sh!t! So ABS does the opposite of what I want when I "push the button". A benefit of ABS is that I have had only minor service on my brakes since owning this vehicle, I am terrified to use the brakes and I drive like a 90 year old!!!!!

ABS does have it's pluses and minuses. Like many things, it is a successful option due to marketing. Anyway, I like cars loaded with options, which are usually the top dollar models. You really do get what you pay for. Power lumbar is kinda cool on long trips.

PS: ABS did squat for me on a snow covered icy road with summer tires and a ton of cargo.

The Accord SE trim level has been out for a couple years.

It sits in between the LX and EX. It's more or less a marketing gimmick, although when they run a nationwide promotion on pricing, it's not a bad deal. I'm surprised it doesn't feature ABS though.

I installed a switch in my WRX to turn the ABS on and off because it is too sensitive. If I would hit pot-holes it would go off :|
In the latest snow we had in Chicago, I could stop faster without ABS....

Can you hit the brakes 15 times per second??

<<When the ABS system is in operation you will feel a pulsing in the brake pedal; this comes from the rapid opening and closing of the valves. Some ABS systems can cycle up to 15 times per second.>>

and according to this, ABS can KILL you!

<<<Do anti-lock brakes really work?
Anti-lock brakes really do help you stop better. They prevent wheels from locking up and provide the shortest stopping distance on slippery surfaces. But do they really prevent accidents? This is the true measure of the effectiveness of ABS systems.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has conducted several studies trying to determine if cars equipped with ABS are involved in more or fewer fatal accidents. It turns out that in a 1996 study, vehicles equipped with ABS were overall no less likely to be involved in fatal accidents than vehicles without. The study actually stated that although cars with ABS were less likely to be involved in accidents fatal to the occupants of other cars, they are more likely to be involved in accidents fatal to the occupants of the ABS car, especially single-vehicle accidents.

There is much speculation about the reason for this. Some people think that drivers of ABS-equipped cars use the ABS incorrectly, either by pumping the brakes or by releasing the brakes when they feel the system pulsing. Some people think that since ABS allows you to steer during a panic stop, more people run off the road and crash.

Some more recent information may indicate that the accident rate for ABS cars is improving, but there is still no evidence to show that ABS improves overall safety.
