Accidents suck

This sucks. I was stopped at a light the other night and someone nailed me. Back bumper was hanging off, spare tire fell from the bottom of my car and the back hatch doesnt open anymore. Her car was totalled so I guess that makes me feel a little better.

Now heres a question...A few years back while driving down I-88 the car infront of me ran over a chunk of semi-truck tire tread. They sent it flying and I ran into it busting a nice sized hole in my front bumper. I never got it fixed (just duct taped it up ) but in this accident I was pushed into the car infront of me which cracked my bumper in another place. This new crack isnt as bad as the gapping hole I had before but the only way to fix either of these things is to replace the entire bumper. What should I do? I was going to start getting repair estimates while Im waiting for her insurance company to get back to me (not really sure why they need to "determine liability"...she hit me while I was stopped at a red light) but I want to know if I should include the front bumper in on the estimates.

If the accident caused enough damage to require (on its own) replacement of both bumpers, then yes, they will be replaced.

You cant see the previous damage in the front bumper but you can see a little of the duct tape from my ghetto repair job in picture 8 (driver side). I dont have a picture of it but Ive had to tie my rear bumper up since it kept getting snagged on curbs. I went to the hardware store and picked up some steel wire and wire clamps. Seems to be working nicely.

Based on the damage to my car Im surprised by how bad her car was. She completely totalled her Ford Focus. She said she was looking off to the side and didnt see me until she was about 20 feet away so I doubt she was going much slower than the 35mph posted. It also felt like I went more up than back which seems odd. Maybe she went under me.

Maybe they will just give me a nice chunk of change. I can then go out and buy a car so when I say car I really mean car and not minivan

depends where you are i guess. In TX, she would pay for the damage to your rear bumper, and you would have to pay for the damage you did to the car in front of you. Thus leaving you to pay for your front bumper yourself.

No, he got slammed into the car in front of him doing additional damage, that on its own would have required replacement.

Same here in California. It's so stupid. We got jacked on our insurance cause my mom was waiting at a stoplight, some was going too fast for the current conditions, didn't have ABS, skidded into my mom, my mom's car jerked forward and hit the car in front and our insurance had to cover the front of our car's damage.

Or at least I'm told. I don't pay the insurance bill, so I dunno. I think our rates went up too cause they for some reason got two separate police reports for the two accidents.

Very stupid law. It must be fun figuring out who's at fault for every damaged car and hurt person in a 15 car expressway pileup.

There is damage to the front bumper. Its more in the grille but thats all one piece. Bottom right hand corner in picture 8. Plus it mangled my license plate

Anyone know the law in Illinois?

This looks like it might add to my fun...The lady that hit me had farmers.

so if someone slammed into someone else's rear bumper at .01c, the guy who got HIT is responsible for plowing into the person in front of them? Something's seriously wrong with that...I can see if the person got hit at like 5mph and ran into the guy in front of them, but really...

I had no intention of buying new car until this happened. I was planning on running this thing into the ground and just want it fixed. I was joking around above.

Makes perfect sense to me. Don't stop so close to the car in front of you. My driving instructor specifically told me that you should be able to see the bottoms of the rear tires of the car in front of you, otherwise you are too close and if you get rear-ended you will hit them.

SO if someone plows into you at 70 mph while you are stopped and you hit the car that was 5 car lengths ahead of you, that is your fault, in your opinion?

After getting hit at 70mph while stopped, whether or not you are responsible for damage to the car in front of you isn't something you're likely to be thinking about.
