Accidentally deleted a partition on my HDD

Well it all started about two days ago, when I attempted to put ipodlinux on my ipod nano. All was going well until a little incident happened in command prompt. When entering the line to delete a partition on my ipod nano, by accident i deleted my Data partition (documents, eg: music etc) on my HDD. Which by the way is a lot of data (pretty much all of my music and some other, less important stuff).

The size of this partition was about 70GBs, out of roughly 190 gigs or so (I have a 200GB seagate Barracuda ATA). The other partition is my primary one (which is still alive), with all of my programs, applications and windows files on it.

Which brings me to the topic and my reason for posting it. I've tried to undelete and resalvage my Data partition, but all attempts have failed (I used numerous programs). I guess my only option now is to make that partition again, since it's gone now. How would I go about making a new partition, is it possilbe to do this without having to reformat, and finally, which program(s) would I have to use to do this?

Any help would be greatly apprieciated.

There's a product called GetDataBack available here with versions for FAT and NTFS partitions that works very well. Read up on the FAQ and see if it's something that might work for you.

Well I'm finally back, I've just been too busy (lazy) to post my reply for the past few days but I've finally come around to it. Unfortunately all of the attempted methods at salvaging my lost data was unsuccessful, so I've decided to make the same partition again for all my data (which was luckily backed up on CDs). Or I might just resize my current partition (117GBs of 183) to the maxium.

How would I go about doing one of the above, I'm a newbie to this kind of stuff. Any help would be greatly apprieciated.

I've used partitionmagic 8 to recover a deleted partition, and it worked very well.

If you haven't yet formatted and overwritten the new partition or overwritten the new partition you made with data, you can still recover with partitionmagic. You just need to delete the newly made partition (the one you intended to "refill" from backup-cd/dvds ), and afterwards, from within partition magic, right-click on the unpartioned space and search for deleted partitions. It will probably find both partitions (the one you're missing, and the new one you created to refill) so you must precisely identify which of the "recoverable" partitions you really want to recover. If you choose the wrong one, you'll need to start over.

REMEMBER: TRY NOT TO OVERWRITE THE LOST PARTITION WITH DATA OR IT WILL BE GONE FOREVER!

PartitionMagic will also let you resize your primary partition, if you need that.

You could also try Acronis Partition Expert 2003 Professional and Active Partition Recovery 3

Hmm, thanks for the reply. I'm using partition magic 8.0 now to find the deleted partition.

Edit: I followed your instructions but it didn't find anything, unfortunately. I guess my only option is to make the new partition again. Oh, and what partition size do I choose for it? NTFS, FAT, FAT32, extended or unformatted?

Thanks again...
