Accidental Bans and Discovering Banned IP Ranges

Hi Everyone:

I have been wrestling with a weird problem: Yesterday I tried to post and received the dreaded message "You have been forbidden to post/reply or edit a message in these forums."

For a moment, I thought I had been banned and sought to p.m. the mods to find out why. Of course that didn't work because I couldn't post/ reply oe edit in the p.m.'s either. I could receive p.m's, but not reply or post. So I emailed the mods directly three different times over the course of the last twenty four hours. Yet emails don't seem to be tracked down by the mods. I am not even sure that they went through.

During all of this, I also got a fellow Anandtecher to p.m. the mods for me. Through a series of relayed messages, I was told that I had not been banned by name, account, or range of IP addresses. The moderator suggested that maybe I was accessing AT from a banned IP. But, to the best of my knowledge, I wasn't. I was using the same machine with the same IP and the same web address that I typically use. My IP is erols/starpower.

So, I decided to download an IP service (Juno) that is not banned and seek to enter that way. It worked, and I am here.

I have two questions:

1) Does anyone have any insight into why this would happen when the mods did nothing to change my status, and how I could maybe fix it on my end.

2) Is there an easy way to find out which ranges of IP addresses AT has banned. That would save me time in the future if this ever happens again.

Thanks for your help.

Do you have a dynamic or static IP?
Did you try rebooting, logging out/in?
Clearing cache?

Hi Azraele:

My IP is dynamic. It seems that the problem was in that area. The mods informed me that a small range of Erols' IP's had been banned because of a recent blitz.

Although Erols' IP's are dynamic, they're sort of static: they don't usually change that often. But my best guess is that mine did for a season and fell within the banned range. However, the mods have intervened and I am now posting from my erols' account again!

Thanks for the advice.
