Accessing private printer via guest network?

Hello all,

Right now, I have a router (AirPort Extreme) on which I have configured a guest and private network. In addition to Wifi, this feeds the wired side of my home network. I have a wired network laser printer on my network. When friends visit my house, they get on the guest network. Frequently, they want to print things and it requires once dance or another.

Any idea how I can expose the private printer to the guest network? If the Airport Extreme can't do this, any recommendation for a wifi router that will do this?

Thanks,
BoB

A Guest network is normally used to allow guests to access your Internet connection without giving them access to anything on your local network (since you normally don't want 'guests' getting into your network). In other words, yours is working as designed.

If you really want to keep an open "guest" network that works as an actual guest network giving Internet access to anyone that connects but isolating them from your private network, but also want your friends to be able to print to your local printer, have them connect to the normal wireless SSID that is able to use the printer. But note that this will also potentially give them access to anything else on your local network if it is not properly secured (i.e. you don't use a password for the user account on your PC).

Most printers come with a USB connection as well. Why can't guests just use that?

That's what i do at home. I have an old access point which is used for guests and if they need to print out anything (usually plane tickets or something like that) i just let them connect via USB to the printer.

Or tell them to sent you the file via email and print it for them.

Or stick a Flash Drive to their computer and then stick it to yours and print it for them.

Or buy an additional printer for $40.
