Hey, i am trying to access the C:\Documents and settings\Isaac folder on my old hard drive before i upgraded my computer to a p4 with a new hard drive.

It lets me access the root of the drive okay, but when i try and get into the folder for my user, i can't. I check the permissions, and there is a key in there like adfad-adfadsf-adfadf-adf but it's more random, it's obviously the GUID for my user on the old computer. I have the same username and password now, but it won't let me in. Is there a way i can get to these files because i really need to get to them?

Thanks

You'll need to take ownership of the files one way or another. Right now, since the other drive still works, I'd suggest booting off it again and copying all the files you need to another location (third drive, burn to CD, network storage) as taking recursive ownership of entire drives is a nuisance. :p Also, if you used EFS (XP Pro) to lock your files up, that's the only way to get them back.

Just because the username was the same on the old system as it is on the new system doesn't mean it's the same user. That's why it doesn't work.

If you try to do it as the local admin of your new system, that should work I think. Or maybe if you make sure your account on the new system has local admin privileges.

Ive got that exact same problem:

The computer will not let me copy the folder which is locked.

Logging on as the local admin does not work.

I tried the same thing in the repair console but nothing has worked.

The only thing that i have yet to try is redirecting the file path from my new profile(new boot drive) to the old Documents and settings folder(drive that is troubling me) but I don't know where in the comptuer I can change that?

Any help guys or any other advice?
