Accessing My Documents on an old Drive

Hey all,

Probably a stupid question, but I've gotta ask it anyways...

I pulled the old primary OS drive from an old computer with all of my files (fairly important). I threw it in an external enclosure and connected it to my current rig. Everything registers well, but I cannot access my old DOcuments and Settings folder (I can get into it, but cannot access my old profile.

It registers as 0 bytes.

What's the deal? Should I boot this drive and retrieve things manually, or can I access this with my current config?

Also, what is the freaking file in HL2 so that I can transfer my old save games. Seriously - I cannot find this thing.

Thanks! :)

From another thread...

You need to assign "ownership" of the subfolders within the \Documents and Settings folder to the account that you're using on the "rescue" computer.

Here's a reference pic :camera: to help. Do this:

1) restart the "rescue" computer in Safe Mode. (why? Because this lets you get at the necessary Security & Permissions stuff)

2) go to the old hard drive's Documents and Settings folder and right-click the subfolder you need to get into.

3) choose Properties from the right-click menu, then the Security tab. The Security & Permissions panel opens.

4) click the Advanced button and the Advanced panel opens. Go to the Owner tab.

5) on the Owner tab, check the box that includes the subfolders, then give Ownership to the user account that you're logged on with on the "rescue" computer.

6) restart the "rescue" computer in normal mode.

On WinXP Professional, another way to get to the Security & Permissions is to go to Tools > Folder Options > View tab, scroll down to the bottom, and disable Simple File Sharing.

Hope that helps :)
