Accessing desktop hdd from laptop

The setup in my home has changed because we moved and are in a different country using a different internet connection. Let me explain so I can ask what I need...
Previously, we had an all in one TV/modem/router box. That fed all my devices via ethernet to the network. I could easily hook up any laptop and find the harddrives on my desktop for playing music. From there I used an audio cable to my stereo.
Now, we have an FTTH fiber modem installed at the back of the apartment. I have an ethernet cable running from there to the living room to a switch, which feeds the desktop and other devices via ethernet. But when I hook up the laptop via ethernet to the switch, I do get internet but can't see the desktop at all.

So, am I supposed to be doing something else to see those hdds?
Thanks

Thank you both. I feel like I had already done that. But I'll try again, I suppose.

EDIT: shares all ok. Don't understand this.

Need to share the drives on the desktop again.
Is it possible that there's some new bug in Windows? I spent all night reading about this. Still can't get the laptop to work. IS it because I'm connecting it to a switch and not a modem/router? But that can't be it because a Raspberrry Pi that is connected via ethernet to the same switch is fine. Sees all the folders that are shared.

Is the FIOS "modem" really just a modem or is it actually a router? If it is just a modem and is giving public IP addresses to your computers through the switch, then that would explain why they can't see each other. But if it is also a router, it should be giving private IPs to your devices and they should normally be able to communicate.

Can you ping the desktop from the laptop? are they on the same subnet?

It's not FIOS. But it is a modem and router. Perhaps it's my setup? It's installed in the back of the apartment, I run a Cat6 from one port to the living room to a switch. The switch then feeds the desktop, a couple of other devices, and the laptop. The other devices see the share folders just fine.

Yes, pingable. Don't know how to check if they're on the same subnet. I tried some instructions I saw online but it didn't really help me.

Yes, pingable.

then you shouldn't have problem sharing. have you tried unsharing then share again?

They are on the same subnet if their ip differs only on the last octet and the subnet mask and gateway are the same.

I'll give un-sharing / re-sharing a go.

Be sure all the computers are in the same Work Group
Ok, checked on that and they are on the same workgroup. Still can't get it to work. This is bizarre because like I said, all other devices sharing the same switch are fine, they see the share folders. I can access them as SMB shares on my raspberry pi, my PS4, everywhere. Makes me think it's gotta be the laptop.

I guess something is messed up on the laptop. Remove network card from device manager, reboot and reinstall network card

I've now reinstalled Windows (had some bizarre dll issues) and now even reinstalled, I STILL can't get my laptop to recognise the shared folders. I sincerely don't know what else to try.

...holy hell...
after all that, I just found that the network setting had discoverable set to 'OFF'. Hours... just to find that one setting wrong. So annoying.
