Accessing and sharing Network Neighborhood behind router... how can this be done? Please help.

My computer is connected to a router.

How do I get it set up for network neighborhood file sharing?

How do I access the network neighborhood outside the router too?

Install WINS on an NT4 server. Anyone who wants to see your share outside of your subnet must have a static WINS entry in their IP properties.

If you have a static WINS entry in your IP properties, in theory, you should be able to open up your Network Neighborhood and, once you're in the proper workgroup, you should be able to access per your given permissions.

If that doesn't work, you can always go to Start, Find, Find Computer and put the IP address in for the computer you are trying to access.

You may also want to take a look for a lovely utility called New World Scanner. It let's you scan your entire subnet for SMB shares.

Well in spite of the fact that this strikes me as an incredibly bad idea, I would like to explore this line of thought a bit further for academic purposes.

Jsm: Let?s say hypothetically he has a WINS server up and running behind the router. And a computer on the internet has Quickfingerz?s IP (the internet IP of the router) set as his static WINS server. And lets for now assume that the correct ports are redirected by the router, so that such requests reach the WINS server on Quickfingerz?s network.

NOW, any name resolution offered by the WINS server will be in the form of private IP addresses from the subnet behind the router. So it doesn?t work.

-If you want a buddy to get at a share on your network use a VPN connection.

Rogue Spear is definitely a game. It's IMHO the best first person shooter around.

It is complete suicide to allow connections like that. If you feel the urge its ports 137 and 139 but I advise way against it. Secondly set up VPN as means of connecting or RRAS if you feel like doing the drill. FTP is as Norssak said, 20 and 21. Good luck.

is there a domain on the other side you can log into? like a PDC on the other side or something?
