Access point VS Wired/Wireless Router

Is there a security difference between getting a wired/wireless router and an access point? I live in a tight brownstone and dont want neighbors leeching. Can anyone offer some help to keep the wireless network safe?

From the Wireless security point of view there is No difference between an Access Point and a Wireless Router.

To followup. A wireless router IS an AP. It just happens to be also be a router and switch combined with the AP. An all in one solution. Just get one with WPA support as well as WPA for any client you have and you'll be fine.
