No, I'm saying that marriage, in the aggregate, decreases the number of sexual partners people tend to have in their lifetimes. Since you view having many partners to be a problem, having as many people married as possible certainly seems like a positive step, no?

I don't want you to get me twisted...I'm an not fighting against gay marriage.

...but I am making the point that you're wrong if you think marriage alone can somehow curb infidelity and multiple partners. People need a reason to stay married, thus, reducing sexual partners.

Allowing more people to marry doesn't decrease divorce and infidelity no more than allowing more people to drive decreases car accidents.

Adding marriages won't fix it...giving people incentive to stay married when they get married, does.

Monogamy had benefits when we didn't understand how to prevent/reduce the transmission of STDs in other ways.

Yeah, I get it....have all the sexual partners you want, just wear a condom this time, or get a shot afterwards.

I didn't say it would fix it alone, but I'm pretty sure the sociological research says that being married decreases the number of lifetime sexual partners someone has on average. Divorce and infidelity are two very different things.

The comparison with car accidents is not good, because driving is a necessary precondition for being in a driving accident. Marriage is not a necessary precondition to having sexual partners. (if anything it works the other way)

So if we go back to the original statement it was that promiscuous sexual behavior is something to be avoided by society for public health purposes, yes? So now our question is if more people being married is likely to increase promiscuity, decrease it, or have no effect. I'm pretty sure the research says it decreases it. If that's the case, isn't public health an argument FOR gay marriage?
