Accepting credit cards online ..

Would a 128-bit SSL and a CGIMail script be sufficient for accepting credit cards online? Somehow e-mail doesn't seem very secure to me .. how do most online stores do it?

Through some type of service issued by a third party, or paypal.com is sufficient enough.

Oh, and I found an online store that just uses a CGI mail script and a secure connection. Is there anything wrong with doing this for a small business?

Log CCs and customer info to a database online, and encrypt the card numbers.

When you go to look at the card #s and custom info, and when hte people put their cards though, make sure its over an SSL connection.

No! Where are you mailing the credit cards? Is every network connection from your webserver to your mailserver to your client encrypted? Thats highly doubtful. Plus, then what are you going to do, read the emails and run them all by hand?

I figure that method wouldn't be secure .. I'm just surprised anyone is dumb enough to use it w/o checking first. Anyway, thanks for the info. What are some other companies similar to VeriSign?

I learned some PHP and MySQL and can do this now. The only thing I don't get is how you un-encrypt information .. can anyone explain this to me?
