About to sell an eBay item, a gentleman in Eastern Europe wants to purchase it. I'm hoping he doesn't ask me to accept Western Union - that is a bad idea, correct?

What if the guy sent a money order? Then it would be safe to go through with the sale, correct?

Western Union = no compensation if the money goes poof.

Western Union = no sale.

Maybe, but money orders can be faked too.

Wire the money?

I've used bidpay.com in the past as well.

I've had a couple of successful transactions with bidders in Eastern Europe (Poland, Bulgaria, and Turkey) and a bunch I didn't go through with since they felt funny. It's all about managing the risk vs profit, many international eBayers realize that most US sellers do not sell overseas so they are willing to pay more to those that do.

MOs can be faked. I'd ask for original US dollars, which I doubt they'll agree to :)

how does one cheat you with western union ?
if the buyer is sending the money, you can pick it up at any Western Union affiliates and then ship the item.

I've accepted money from people in Europe. ($1000+ transactions) and I had no trouble.
I like it better than paypal, since I'm not hit up with any transaction fees

How can you be scammed using Western Union and you're the SELLER PICKING UP THE MONEY ?

The buyer pays CASH (required for international transfers) for the Money transfer, then
You pick up CASH from the Western Union place and that's it, done, no one can take it back.

Sounds like the best way to do it. Money orders can be faked. Paypal can have stolen credit card

On the other hand, if you're a BUYER SENDING MONEY, Western Union is a definite no.
Once cash is sent and picked up, no way to get it back.

Well, I am definitely the one RECEIVING money. So Western Union is safe? I am going to go with bidpay if possible. But if Western Union is safe.... hmm...

Looks like bidpay has a maximum sent on the amount you can send, $700. Hmm... maybe western union would be the better option. I've never used Western Union, I don't want to get screwed.

International payment + paypal is a definate no no, the only time I do it is for repeat customers.

Why not call Western Union and ask them if there is any way that they could defraud you?

I have recieved cash in the mail too before, though it was for less than $100.

My guess is that he is scamming some else and having them send the money to your account.
i.e I sell something on ebay and request payment with WU but ever one knows that send WU to europe is a scam so I also buy something on ebay and have the money sent to that person in the US.

Here's something interesting:

SAFETY: Be wary of buyers who are not concerned with costs or ask you to deliver to a country not supported by PayPal

Con artists often want the items shipped immediately and do not mind spending extra money for overnight delivery.

Per PayPal's User Agreement, you may only ship to the countries on the PayPal approved countries list. If you ship to a country not on this list, PayPal reserves the right to limit your account access.

PayPal Approved Countries List:
https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/gen/approved_countries-outside

If the buyer's address is provided in the transaction details, ship only to that address. Do not ship packages to a country other than where the buyer's account is. For example, do not ship to the U.K. if the buyer has a U.S. PayPal account. You can find a member's account type in the payment's transaction details.

Receiving is perfectly safe, sending it is a definite no-no. Basically, it is cash, once its in your hand there is nothing they can do. Thats why it's used for fraud so much.
