Accepted at NYU...

As April 1st has come and gone, I have heard back from all the colleges i applied to. I was accepted to NYU and was given a pretty generous financial aid package in which i only need to pay about 4k in loans. The problem is that i am interested in comp sci.

Does anybody know how NYU's comp science program is? Is it renowed and recognized? What kind of job prospects can i expect graduating from NYU with degree in comp sci?

NYU is definitely not known for its computer science programs... but its the name that will get you jobs and such.

yea, and such, it's not a name.
for computer science, going to harvard won't be as good as berkeley, say. people in tech aren't that dumb.

look it up on some ranking. usually, at top are berkeley, stanford, mit, carnegie mellon

NYU isn't a big name in CS, as others have said. It's still a good school, though, so don't think you're getting a second-rate education. The campus is interesting, too (sister is working on a Masters there, so I've visited briefly). I hope you like NY (and can afford to live there!).

If you're doing Comp Sci in NYU, I hope you're expecting what you will be getting, which is a 5 year dual degree program with Stevens Institute of Technology right across the Hudson. Basically you get a science degree from NYU and the Comp Sci from Stevens. I studied here for 1 year for Math and Mechanical and I'm transferring to Brooklyn Poly mainly for the cost and the better education for engineering and that I don't want to pay an extra year. Now that's basically the bad points about NYU. The good is great, which is a GREAT experience especially in Grenwich village (is that how u spell it?). A lot of the buildings surrounds Washington Square Park, and when the weather is nice there are a lot of fairs going on within a block of you if you do live in a dorm near the park. I'm guessing you're a guy so there are a lot of pretty girls here. The location is great. The city experience is great. You will meet people you like and dislike just like anywhere. The #1 reason why people like NYU is the location. The #1 reason why people don't like NYU is the cost. If you can afford it, and not worry about money while going to NYU, I'd say go for it. Besides no one really knows exactly what they want to do. I'm actually thinking about a mix of business and engineering.

I estimate that i will need to take out about 4k in loans each year so 16k (4 year undergrad) in debt when i graduate. I got this generous financial aid package because i got in through the heop proram (basically a program for the financially disadvantaged who show promise at a private institution but cannot finance it alone).

Wow you sound like you are in a very similar situation as me! Ironically, was also accepted and considering both of the schools you mentioned (Stevens and Polytechnic University). Since i suppose you have already spent a semester or two at Poly, what do you think of the experience there? How are the classes, social life, campus, etc? How does the education compare to NYU in terms of difficulty, etc?

Yea, I am currently considering Stevens Institute of Technology in NJ and Polytechnic University in Brooklyn. Also got into RPI (rensselaer) but the cost of attending is too high (need to take out like 20k in loans a year). I also heard Stony Brook has a pretty decent comp sci program but there is something about attending a suny when i got these good offers from privates that doesn't click.

Switch to finance at Stern instead. Then you won't have to worry about jobs.

no.. you dont need to know other techies.. just their boss

lawyers, business people, managers all need IT help. and NYU has tons of those

Congrats, but comp sci is pretty tough stuff.

The first part of this post is not true (regarding a 5 year dual at Stevens). This is true for Computer engineering. I am a computer science major and a math major at NYU, and I can guarantee you, I have never even seen Stevens.

As an NYU student, I should tell you that I hope you can deal with living in a big city. It can really be wearing after awhile. However, there is no place like New York, and if you can deal with it, you will have a great time.

As for NYU not being known for CS -- that's true, but you'll be able to get some diversity from all the other cool classes you'll get to take, and all the wonderful people you'll meet in NYC.

You'll probably end up a lot more balanced coming out than oh, I was.
