acceptable temps for a 6870

Noticed that my fan on my 6870 is working pretty hard to keep my card cool. Checked gpuz after an hour or so of tribes ascend and it peaked at 81c. I don't know much about card cooling but that seems hot, my 4870 that I had in the same case never came close to 80c.

81C is not necessarily bad, but it's coming close, especially for a 6870. Is the fan/heatsink on the card clean and free of dust? How is your case air flow? Are you overclocking?

This is fairly normal with the default fan profiles. The don't ramp up the speed until the card is already pretty hot. As the other poster said, low 80s is safe but getting close to the max. You could try setting the fan to manual at 60-70%, and see if that helps.

Card is perfectly clean and only 2 weeks out of the box. Case is not very big but I've tied up the cables the best I could and the side is vented. Case and fans are cleaned out at least monthly and the house is smoke free. No overclocks on anything, don't need it as its outputting to a 720 p tv. The corsair psu has a pretty big fan I think its 140 I have an 80 exhausting from the back and a delta cooler on the i5. mobo and CPU run cool enough and the old 4870 ran considerably cooler at a manual fan setting of only 40%.

If you're up for it and there are no void or warranty stickers, take off the heatsink and apply some new TIM

I found myself not trusting the default fan profiles the drivers use and always use a third party program to manually adjust or to set a profile.

I forgot yesterday to run up gigabyte trixx and adjust my fan to 45% as always for my 7970 and i was playing BF3 when i heard my fan ramp up very loud every few secs...so i minimize the game and see my card is at 95 cel so i immediately ramp my fan up to 100% till my temps hit 50cel...then i put it to 45%.

Always use a third market program like msi afterburner or gigabyte trixx if you can help it.

My 6870 hits roughly 80C on default fan profiles with good airflow in my case. I think that kind of temperature is fine for a GPU while gaming. However, with Bitcoin mining I keep it below 65C since that is nearly 24/7 usage and gaming is far less frequent than that.

Ravenseal, assuming the OP has the stock cooler, keeping it at 60C would make the card unbearable loud(at least to me).
