Acceptable 12v rail voltage

What is the acceptable 12v rail voltage variance? I am looking at my TR2 600 on the other PC and my 7970 occasionally has artifacts while mining in desktop use. I am running CPUHW Monitor and the voltage dips around 11.500 range. Min is 11.448 and max is 11.808

I have noticed that my 7970 is quite sensitive to crappy power supplies. I had artifacts and reboots when I was running it on a bad wall outlet, I switched to another outlet and it was better. But then I replaced my crappy refurb TX 750 and just about all the issues went away. Every now and then, I would get a random screen flicker when I first launch cgminer and during the initial load on the card. But other than that, it has been pretty smooth.

In comparison to my TX750 with a 7950 and a 7870 Tahiti LE is at 12.000 constant 99% of the time. Min is 12.000 max is 12.096

I have 3 7970 and three different machines. All the computers shows min 12 volts
They are usually 12.01-12.8

So could undervolting the 12v rail cause artifacts on a 7970 while it is under load?

Improper voltage not only cause artifacts it can also damage or cause no to boot at all

The ATX spec allows for 5% variance on the 12 volt rail, so the range is 11.4 V to 12.6 V.

Thank you gentlemen, I got the answer I was looking for!

Now I must complain to Thermaltake for sending me a POS replacement PSU :whiste:

If they make me pay for return shipping again I think my best option is to throw this POS in the garbage and just buy a new PSU. If I send it back, I'll already be up to $40 on shipping alone and the PSU was about $40 when I bought it... since I never received the rebate for it...

Is your TT TR2 the 80 Plus Bronze variant or is it an older variant, which were of poorer quality?

Might as well look for an 80 Plus Gold unit to cut down the losses due to electricity.

My TT TR2 600 is supposedly 80+ according to TT's website... But according to newegg and the retail box, it has no certification

Called up TT, didn't have to wait at all, spoke to the rep on the phone and he told me they will cover shipping both ways... I had to go online and submit the RMA so I am still waiting for a response... I chose advance RMA service again... So I'll give this another try.

Well its pretty tough to get 80 Plus bronze for less then $a 50
TR2 suppose to no more then 3 %
It has very good review by hardwaresecrets

I got my CX 600 for less than $50 in October 2013 ($59.99-$20 MIR which actually arrived, unlike TT rebate). TR2 was about as much as it is going for now except that it is not 80+ Bronze. It worked fine until the original unit crapped out for no reason after just a couple of weeks of use with a moderate load (7850 & undervolted 5870 with OCed 2500k @ stock voltage) which probably did not exceed 400W.

TT TR2 ia Garbage !! Just look at the reviews and the test that thing goes through.. I dont understand why people use high end hardware with cheap PSU. Clean, reliable and stable power is requiered to keep the hardware healthy and running strong for long time. Also getting a high efficiency PSU not only delivers stable power but also reduces the cost of your electricity bill.
You can look into Seasonic X-650 PSU which is priced reasonably.
Always look at reviews from Anandtech, TechPowerUp, Guru3D and see how it performs and whats inside of it. People who looks for reliability must check those stuff.

Well, I am more than happy with my CX 600 and eVGA 500b. I initially bought the TR2 600 for my office rig, but shortly thereafter the mining craze set in...

This is the 80 Plus Bronze unit made by FSP. It has the AH2NFB after the "TR2-600" in its full model number.

Yours must be the older, worse-performing one as it doesn't have "AH2NFB" but rather "NL2NC". The AH2NFB is the unit found in the Hardware Secrets review, not the one you have. Reviews are hard find on yours, but I suspect poor ripple control would be present on it.

Always look for 12 volt rail and and read the review about ripple effect. That plus never get less then 80 plus bronz.
Even my crosair 400 CX can stand up to any 500 watt P/S with out any problem

Remember that software voltage readings are unreliable, need to measure with a digital multimeter to be sure.

That's what TT phone support told me. However, it is fairly evident that something is wrong with the PSU because my single 7970 has artifacts in desktop use while I am mining on it. If I put it in another rig with a 7950 on a different PSU, it works fine and there are no artifacts.

Mining and using for normal activity ?
I dunno about that.
I never use for mining while using for some thing else!

Yep, absolutely! I use all my mining rigs for normal activity. They are all windows PCs, not the modded USB stick milk crates...

My Corsair 1200 gives me 12.0-12.1 at all times, while my CM1000 is 12.4+. Honestly seems like computers like the 12.4 better than 12.0 and I can imagine problems below 12.0.
