I need some help here. I came to this country (US) 5 years ago (I'm 18 now) with a good knowledge of the English language and naturally I got a lot better and comfortable with it. I've no problems talking with my peers nor with writing but I sound like a fob and it's annoying me to no end. What I want to do is eliminate (totally, if possible) my accent but I don't know where to start. Is there any classes I could take or maybe use software? Money is of no concern 'cause I was in the process of saving up for a phat ride but I've decided that this can wait. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Speech Therapy, I would guess. If you are near a University, talk to a linguistics professor and see if any of them have advice.

What you need is a speech therapist. I just looked in the Yellow Pages for my relatively small city and found one under "Speech & Language Pathologists". Good luck.

It depends. Do you want the Southern talk? You know Americans do have accents too. If you want to sound like you're from the Midwest, then follow the advice given by others above. If you don't want to subscribe to some program that involves paying money, then buy tapes or open your dictionary and learn phonetics. Then interact with people who speak the way you would ideally want to sound like.

If you're trying to lose a British accent, you better get help quick 'cuz that accent is luvly. ;) /Me's trying to perfect it. :p

Of course even in Britain they have dialects.

I imagine any good speech therapist or dialect coach would be teaching you "proper" English which is theoretically without regional accents, and is very similar to "The Queen's English" but with American vowel sounds.
