Accelerometer?

i am not sure where to put this so i will put it here, if a mod sees that it should be in a better area, please move it.

i would like to do some testing on different types of recoil reducing devices on certain firearms (long guns) and was thinking about attaching an accelerometer to the firearm so i can have a readout of what happens.

unfortunately i don't know anything about them - how much they cost, what type i would need or anything.

any "pointing me in the correct direction" would be greatly appreciated.

I did research project using wireless motes before. They can have a range of sensors on them and one of them was an accelerometer. It was basically a tiny programmable board with storage, sensors and wireless radio. Crossbox technology makes/sells them. I think they were a few hundred each. Not cheap, but they may have other products that are more specific for what you're looking for. Wireless sensor on a rifle with sound, heat, accelerometer .. etc sensors would be nice too.. 🙂

will look into them. don't need wireless - it can be wired and only think i need x,y,z axis measuring. ambient temps i can get w/ a regular thermometer as they wouldn't be needed except for the pneumatic buffers (i think) as everything else is a solid of some sort

Well I don't have any experience with standalone accelerometers, but I do know that they wont cost you hundreds of dollars. One easy place to find them would be in a wii-remote. This remote can be synced with your PC via bluetooth, and I know there are simple programs that will allow you to track all the data being put out of the remote. As a quick hack, you could duct tape the remote to the gun and see what sort of results you could get. Future projects could involve building your own board with accelerometers to cut down on the size/cost. If you are just looking for a quick solution that you could get moving on right away, check out the wii remote.

I would say look online for application notes using accelerator's, there are tons out there. It's really basic too, it should be complicated. After your a little research, post if any problems.
They are really cheap I think, so.

i have seen a hack like this, but how many g's can a wii handle? also, will it be fast enough to see the actions of a firearm? everything is going to take time second or 2 max (not sure the exact time from hammer striking primer to the cascading events to finish, but very short, with huge spikes in acceleration in all 3 axis. making a strong Al rail (rail if you do not know) attachment is not a problem to house the electronics - in fact that will be necessary - don't want a wii remote flying around...

i appreciate the info
