I don't see an actual description of it though. What is it? How does it work? Is it simply a passive cooler?

"The Accelero S1 is a High-End solution compatible with NVIDIA 7900 series specifically also for the GT versions.
For NVIDIA 7800 GS (AGP) the next High-End solution to launch is the Accelero S2. Whilst the Accelero S3 is compatible with ATI's X1300/X1600 series and NVIDIA's 7600 series. All patented passive designs ensure no noise and high cooling performance. The S series will be available starting June 2006."

it begins! ;)

so tempted to go completely silent.....

from the picture you can make out heatpipes coming out of the bottom of the whitish rectangular bit (probably the radiator) and going down to what looks like the GPU block. so i'm guessing it looks a bit like those thermalright CPU heat sinks.

yes, it is a passive cooler, but then just about every videocard cooler except for TECs and maybe small air conditioner system (does anyone have one) is a passive cooler. this one, unlike most of the others, is fanless.

so it would be 10% off $319 = $287 - $50MIR = $237 ? o_O

so tempted to build a micro atx yonah based silent htpc setup with this! ;)

note: i think that as volume gets back to meeting demand, the 7900gt prices are going to get even more competetive. the PNY 7900gt is already selling around $280 pricepoint and i suspect other board vendors will start following suit soon.

It looks like it has a fan if you look at the products available. I think it's just a heatpipe design with a HUGE "radiator" and a low speed fan. It's probably not actually silent, but somethin like 15 or 20 db so it's barely audible.

*EDIT* Nevermind, was looking at the X1

sounds like no fans to me. hopefully they'll have an option to mount like a 92mm though ;)

Zip ties on a fan is the only way i'd consider this.

not really, but for some reason it became popular parlance to discuss it as so. air conditioning is active. fan is merely blowing air around.
