Maybe you've just got a defective cooler? 78° is ridiculous for a 7970 with an AIO on it.

You know what that is possible.

I was already in contact with Arctic for another set of screws and sent them an email with this thread.

They were asking for my proof of purchase which I will scan and send today or tomorrow. Maybe the pump just needs to be replaced?

Update

So I was never fully happy with the performance of the hybrid on my 7970 compared to what I was seeing around the web. I think there was a reason they released a 7970 version of it. So I decided to take face2face suggestion and I picked up the G10 + H55

The install for this was 10x easier than the hybrid this solution has a far superior mounting bracket and I think that explains my final results. I was also able to install this with the stock memory/vrm plate without any modication.

Here are my full load temps now.

So this is the performance I was looking for when I started this little adventure just took me another product to get there. I'm doing a second build for a friend so i'm going to sell him the hybrid for $75 dollar and only take a small hit on it. That other build has a 4890 so I don't see myself having the same issues with that card and performance.

Also for those looking at the G10 solution its easy to mount and the stock fans aren't bad noise wise. I also didn't run into VRM temp issues like PCper did because I was able to reuse the stock heat plate.

how did you end up cooling the memory and VRM with the G10?

The 92mm fan that comes with the G10 plus the default heat plate is all i'm using.

The fan that was on the shroud of the accelero isn't as powerful.

so you were able to keep it cool with just the fan you didn't have to install any mini heatsink on it right?

For my card with the default heat plate I didn't need any.

It will vary per card!

Glad it all worked out, but you did get much lower VRM temps without the heatplate and naked, it was 81C, that was with the weaker Hybrid fan. As i've said, reusing thermal tape thats quite old is a bad idea.

But the G10 is a great kit. Great temps even though its using the CPU exhaust as intake. :D

Congrats, the temps look much better on the GPU and VRM. MSI uses more of a thermal pad to cover the mosfets on the TF3 cards. They hold up pretty well even after removing it and putting it back on. I did notice better temps using Fujipoly pads instead, but OP's temps are fine. You even have some room for some overclocking. Getting another 100-150MHz out of the core should be reasonable.

In general I agree but with this setup and the heat plate providing downward pressure I had no issue reusing it. If it was just the memory and heatsinks that I was installing then yes the tape is not strong enough on its own.

This is my air flow setup so the back is still used as an exhaust.

My card will do 1150 on stock vcore so that will be next.
