"Accelerated" dialup..

Our house is 1/2 mile too far away from wherever for DSL, and there's no cable out in the middle of nowhere (relatively speaking, of course..). So, we're stuck with dialup -- but our ISP has "accelerated access" as a free option -- does the extra compression help at all, or would I be loading extra junk to my startup list? link

I don't know what it is, but generally anything on the web that says "Gator" will screw you over.

they just cache stuff, it is mostly a gimmick. some people will benefit a little, but don't pay extra for it

The "accelerated" dialup I saw at my grandfather's house was just some junky software that turns image quality to crap. Instead of loading full images it just pulls some of the information, then puts together some blurry mess in place of the real thing.

It sounds like this is a software thing that you linked to, so it could very well be the same thing I just described.

Yeah its all about caching so it really doesn't make all that much of a difference. Also the fact that Gator will r4pe your computer a new butthole

Gator.net == GRU.net == Gainesville Regional Utilities == Gainesville, Florida == University of Florida == Florida Gators..if that explains the name..lol

As far as dialup == crap, you're preaching to the choir. I had DSL for over a year, then we moved. It's not available here, and neither is cable.

Thanks for the confirmation -- I'll probably end up turning images off and dealing with it..lol

It works pretty well actually. But it does make images look like CRAP. You can adjust that though, and considering most of the images on pages aren't that important it's no big deal. You can always right click on the image and select show original image. At least that's how netzero's highspeed works. If I was stuck with dialup I'd get it.

Yep, I use that crap and pay the extra $3 per month and is well worth it to me. Pages load almost immediately and yes, the images look terrible.

Now I am paying $8.95 a month for my ISP. Big deal.

All it does is compress images more, makes them look terrible. Will not accelerate "downloads" though.
