For the Client? Duh!

Just one more gimmick to fleece the unknowledgeable.
 
from what I understand its kinda like a local proxy, just caching stuff... its also supposed to allow some different type of compression above and beyond that the modems usually do. From what I've seen it actually helps some, not alot but anything helps on dialup. It mainly only helps with page browsing, downloads aren't affected much.
 
It is the exact same tech that AOL(AOsmell!) uses in thier load'o'software. They basically compresses images on thier servers. Then it doesn't take as long to load a page, since it has smaller sized .jpg's etc. It won't do anything for downloading files or the like. Still slow as always. OTOH if I ever get around to working on a project, I have a good idea which would vastly speed up 56k, via software. I'm pretty surprised that no one has really thought of it before. It will help increase speeds in all cases, even with zip,etc.
