ACC Championship....

Ok I am a little confused. Is there anyway that Virginia Tech can play in a BCS bowl. Georgia Tech is 9-3 and 7-2 in the division. In the other division both other division Virginia Tech defeated Wake Forest, and Maryland isn't even ranked.

So is there any chance that Virginia Tech will get to play in a bowl game seeing as it has the best record in either division??

So, despite the fact that they have the best record in the ACC they will not go to the Championship Game or get a BCS berth??

-Kevin

No, only the champ gets an automatic bid. They would have to get in on as an at-large bid and that's not likely to happen. I think the ACC is too weak this year to get two teams in.

Conference record is the only thing that matters as far as the ACC Championship game goes.

GT 38 - VT 27. That's why you aren't going.

What is an at-large bid?

Also, I know Georgia Tech has the tie-breaker but Tech has the better record. Not only do they have the better record there, they have the BEST record in the ACC.

Granted I am biased towards my school, but VT isn't a bad team. The Offense is inconsistent yes, but the defense is #1 in the country.

Yeah, they have the best overall record in the ACC, but they are 2nd in their division with their in conference record. So no ACC championship game for them. But, hey, they ended up having a great year, but just got off to a bad start. They may well be playing the best football in the ACC right now. They will wind up in a good bowl.

Ugh, that is such crap 🙁. So if We lost every other game we played but won all of the ACC games then we could still go to the Championship (Granted most games are in the ACC).

So is there anyway we can overcome GT's tiebreaker? Also, I dont know the bowl scheme for college football (I, up until last year, watched Pro Football, and then MLB so I'm still learning).

We lost 2 of the games that counted the most. We won the other 7 🙁! It all comes down to that damn tiebreaker)

In the conference, GT is 7-1. Their other two losses were to teams not in the conference. VT is 6-2 in the conference, they won all their out-of-conference games.

It's not like the NFL where every game counts and the division record is used as a tie-breaker...only the conference games count for determining the conference (division) champions. In case you forgot, Florida State was 7-4 going into the conference championship against VT last year, but had the best record in the division.

Nope. GT has an in-conference record of 7-1 and VT is 6-2. Both team's regular season schedules are finished. Even if GT had wound up at 6-2 by losing to someone other than VT they would have still had the tie-breaker over VT. GT would have had to have finished 5-3 in conference for VT to pass them.

Basically, the ACC is split into two divisions. The team with the best in conference record in each division goes to the ACC championship game. It's not like the pros where the non-conference games count against your conference standings.

And it has nothing to do with the tiebreaker. GT had a better record in conference...the tiebreaker would have only come into play if both teams had the same record in conference but GT had beaten them head-to-head.

7-2 now. They lost to Georgia just now (I was pretty psyched until I remembered that they still had the tie-breaker).

No, Georgia is an SEC school. So it's not a conference game. They were playing GT because that is a big in-state rivalry.

You're still not getting it. Non-conference games do not count when it comes to conference championships. They are still 7-1 in conference play.

OH nevermind, for some reason I thought that Georgia was in the ACC but they are in the SEC.

Well still we have the better regular record....I know it means, nothing but this system for a BCS berth is so screwed up and useless.

Not really, considering your conference (ACC) winner is guaranteed a BCS bowl game, VT blew it because they didn't win enough conference games.

Its the championship and at-large bids that are a cause for controversy, with at-large bids being corrupted by drawing power (money).

Yea which in my opinion is crap (Obviously lol). Maryland isn't even ranked and VT has a better overall and conference record than Wake.

What I meant by the system is flawed is that conference wins only count. It makes no sense that a team that is unranked but unbeaten in a conference (Hypothetically) should have a BCS bowl berth over a team who is ranked has a better overall record, just a loss difference in the conference.

Which bowl will VT most likely go to? A few friends are thinking about making the long trip down to one, but I dont know which one to look out for.

In the meantime I'm going to figure out what at-large bids are and what VT's chances are of getting one.

Oh so it is basically a Wild Card team (Based on Wikipedia's description (despite the fact that it is aimed towards NCAA Basketball)).

Any chance at all that VT can get an at-large bid? If that happens...what will happen then?

Your bias is clearly clogging your head. These conference championships are some of the best things to college football, and removes a lot of the BS from the system. In a certain sense it is the closest thing we have to a college playoff system. You don't have to be ranked (which involves a lot of bias) to get into a bowl game - all you have to do is win your conference (assuming you're in one of the BCS conferences). Win the games that matter and you're in - pretty simple, no at-large selection BS and it gives unranked teams a legit shot at a really big game.

You can't count on records and stats to tell the whole story. Teams that were crap earlier in the season could very well turn things around to become one of the, if not THE, best teams in the nation, but their early season performance might keep them out of the top 10 or even unranked.

Or you could struggle with injuries (and off field problems) in the middle of the season and then play well enough to be very highly ranked and make it.

The NFL system just seems so much better in my opinion.

The conference champion is not decided by overall record, yet by in-conference. I'm happy with our record at 10-2, much better than what I expected.
