Academic Versions ?

Just out of curiosoty what's to stop a person from buying an academic version from say Newegg or costco
or even Compusa.

Nothing really, except that you can't legally use it if you're not a student. (or a teacher?)

If I'm going to pay $100 for software, I'd like to make sure that I can legally use it at least. Otherwise, I could just download it off Kazaa and save my $100. Of course, I'd never do that since I pay for all of my software. :p

I guess if you only want to half-pirate soiftware for home use no one is likely to catch you at it. It's not legal for business use though, so any company using it and getting one of those SPA audits will still pay those huge license violation fines. Remember it only takes one disgruntled employee to turn you in.

Comp USA doesn't sell academic software. You're probably thinking about the "student/teacher" versions of Office etc. Those are sold to anyone I think.
