Who gets the money when someone buys an academic research article that is only available through a paywall journal database (peer reviewed articles)? Do the researchers actually see any money, or is it just the journal database company that gets paid?
The journal generally owns the copyright to the text and gets the money for it.
I have been paid one time for my dissertation. But that was because I agreed to let a company sell it and give me proceeds. The problem (and I knew it at the time) is that I only get royalties if they earn a certain amount in a year and that has only happened once.
The journal company gets paid. University libraries generally have some kind of subscription you can access remotely if you have any business with them. I have no idea what the cost is on the subscription model. I know they gouge desperate students on a per article basis.
