Academic OS versions

aite, in a differant thread, i explain how i screwed myself.

now i'm looking for new copy of XP home/pro (cheaper=better). i notice newegg.com is selling academic versions of home for decent price. i am a student at local college. do i need to do anything special to order or to be able to install it or is it just like OEM/Retail?

I'd ask before I buy it, but it shouldn't be any different. The OS between all the different versions should be the same, it's the liscencing that is different.

If your at a local college they probably have a store that sells MS stuff, most stores due. Like credit card company's, MS does a realy good job of marketing to college students. Hell if your lucky enough to be taking some computer administration-related classes some colleges have agreements with MS that you can get any OS (and developement software) for completely no cost.

So even if it's more expensive you can ask there and buy at Newegg.com.

My local community college had a program like that and I got a few different versions of W2k and WinXP thru them, even the very expensive advanced server versions.

Of course, you don't realy ever have to deal with keys again if you don't realy want to. All perfectly legal, too. (couldn't resist, but if you need windows, you need windows.)

I've never had key problems - but I thought a key would fit almost all or many discs of software - that is not true?

With Win95 I use to use a key from a copy of Office 97 to run it.

Sometimes generic keys will work with many different versions w2k, but there were some that needed their own special key. I don't know why. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, never worried about it much with W2k/WinXP.... I think it's more doesn't nowadays then anything else. Plus with WinXP you still have to have it activated with Microsoft over the internet and over the phone, unless you have a "corporate" edition.

WXP requires a different key for each different version, Academic/OEM/Corporate/Pro+Home Retail. You cannot install Retail XP Home with academic key etc... Don't know if there are "generic" keys foe XP existing.

oh, fyi, i had/have xp academic. just not sure which machine the academic got installed on. i purchesed it thru my college last year. installed like the OEM version i had, just not sure if i would need to prove to newegg.com that i'm a student.

Might need to fax them a copy of your student ID, or a pay stub or something if you were faculty. Not sure. MS is much less "loose" with their academic stuff than they used to be, years ago.
