AC97 driver problem

I did a fresh windows xp install on a friends computer and now the onboard sound won't work. It's a c-media ac97 2.2 onboard chip. The device manager says "This device cannot start (code 10)". I've downloaded the newest driver and flashed the bios and made sure that the onboard sound is enabled in the bios. I'm out of ideas now. Any suggestions! Thanks in advance.

Have you tried deleting/removing it from Device Manager, and rebooting to let Windows try and enable it again?
