ac97 and a quiet microphone

here's the rundown:

i've got a giga-byte ga-7vaxp ultra mobo that has onboard sound (ac97)

unfortunately, i ditched my old ensoniq audiopci sound card a while back, and now my microphone is entirely too quiet. even though i've got the sound turned all the way up, it's horribly quiet. i can apply the 20db boost, but i get a whine in the background and it's REALLY annoying.

is there any software out there that will sit as a layer to boost my mic input? or does anyone have some sort of solution? thanks
 
it could just be the mic 🙂

there's no program that will do a better job at a 20db boost. a boost is a boost.


also...onboard sound is never too good. especially via chipsets.
