Just had my AC worked on and now anytime its turned on the car starts to jump as if it were going to stall. It does it sometimes even without the AC on. Would this be caused by them overtighting the belt?

I doubt over tightening an accessory belt could cause that. Also some cars don't even have the ability to manually tighten the belt, they are spring loaded tensioner so depending on the car it may be not even worth checking.

2000 chevy caviler -wifes car. Its just a pos to get her around town but dont want to sink alot of money into it.

The idel air control valve on the throttle body should kick it up when the AC turns on.

Check for vacuum leaks first and then clean the Idle Valve and throttle body next. Just spray out the throttle body and remove the Idle valve (2 small screws if I remember correct) and spray it off with carb cleaner. Also disconnect the negative battery terminal when doing this as that may help as well.

Any check engine lights?

Actually, the FIRST thing I'd do is make sure it wasn't unplugged and then forgotten about when the A/C repair was done. Almost sounds like the IAC is unplugged.

Is the fan running when the AC is placed ON? It should go on at least "low" (if the cavalier has multiple speeds for radiator fan). If the High side pressure is too high (as it would be if the fan were not running, or if the system is way overcharged) the compressor will bog the motor (but not really to stalling), just quite noticeably.

However I think that if the car is cold and the ac is turned on it should not be so high.
