AC compressor dead?

I have an 05 CRV, the air has been fine but the past couple days it stopped blowing cold. It is also making a loud noise from the general area of the compressor when the ac is on. I can get a whole new compressor on ebay for 150 or so, a clutch rebuild kit is much cheaper. Any suggestions on determining the problem exactly?

You can indeed get a whole new compressor for 150 bucks, but you definilty cant install it yourself, unless you have all the vacuum pulldown equipment for an AC system at your house.
This is one i would bring to the shop, because more than likely, you will be doing that anyway...

+1 above.... unless you have all the specific tools, once you open up the vacuums lines in your AC system, changing the compressor is just the 1st step. It's better in the end to take it to an AC shop. They have all the tools needed for the right diagnosis and as usual find a good, reputable shop and be ready to spend more than you expected... but if the shop is good, then it's money well spent. Replacing the high pressure line in my car and refilling the AC cost just under $400.

From what I've always been told it's generally a good idea to replace the condenser when replacing the compressor in modern cars.

yup, they make the tubes so thin nowadays they get clogged and the new compressor might have a very short (and expensive) life.

Depends on what failed. If it's just a front seal or the clutch, then there shouldn't be any bits left in the system to cause trouble. But yes, if the compressor has grenaded itself, it's best to replace the condenser too.

Also, any time the system has been opened to atmosphere the receiver/drier (in TXV systems) or the accumulator (in orifice tube systems) should also be replaced as well.

Whenever you replace a failed AC Compressor, the condenser and the receiver dryer should be replaced. Also all the entire system needs to be flushed out to remove any potential debris. Failure to do that can cause your new compressor to fail and not doing it will void your compressor warranty on a new part. Any AC shop has the tools and fluids to do this and should tell you it needs to be done. Does not add much cost to the bill. Also, replace any O rings on any fittings that were undone that have O rings
