So we have two identical phones, for just over one year (i.e. warranty is expired). One of the phones began gradually to need more frequent recharging than usual, battery charge wasn't lasting as long. Then it started taking longer to charge. e.g. 2 hours at first, and then 3 hours, instead of the normal ~1:15. I also noticed when I connected the charger, there was a lag (four to five seconds) before the phone indicated the presence of the charger, rather than about one full second as before.

I inspected the port and the connector. Nothing suspicious about the adapter or cable, it has never been kinked or pinched. I could move the cable around while attached to the phone with no interruption of charging status. Reasonably thinking the battery was dying prematurely, I swapped batteries with the other phone. No difference in behavior. Then concluded, well the only thing left is the phone is dying slowly.

We lived with it for a couple more days, then I got the idea to try swapping the AC Adapter wall wart (we got one charger with each phone). Bingo! The 'indicator' lag was gone, the phone charged in about one hour and has held the charge for ~10 hours now, which is consistent with behavior prior to all of this.

So, if you have a phone acting up similarly, before concluding its either the phone or battery, don't discount the charge adapter being the culprit! New adapter is way cheaper than either a new battery or phone.
