AC Adapter and Notebook

This is probably a dumb question. My friend and I were just talking about the Sony PSP, and that your not supposed to use it without having the battery in it. He had this question that I said I would post here. It's based on the same idea.

Can you use a notebook by just running it on AC Power, and not the battery? You can do that right? Even if the battery wasn't connected?

I don't know about Sony Vaio's, but just about all the rest work perfectly well on the A/C adapter with no battery inserted. In fact, while it is somewhat controversial, many OEMs even recommend removing the battery when running on A/C for extended periods of time where the laptop is truly a desktop replacement.
