Abysmal performance in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars demo

My specs:
7900 GT
E2160 @ 2.8 ghz
2 gb DDR2 @ 1100 mhz

My problem:
I bought the retail version of Quake 4 years a go. Before I upgraded my computer, I had an Athlon 3000+ and a 7800GS and I was able to max out the game at 1680x1050, including some FSAA and AF. Everything ran smoothly, it was great!

So now I'm running the hardware I listed above. I do not have Quake 4 installed at the moment (it's at home - I'm at school) so I can't make any comparisons. But anyways, I downloaded the ET:QW demo through Valve's Steam. As soon as I start the game, I get what appears to be about 7 or 8 FPS at the menu - AT MINIMUM SETTINGS. When trying to load up a game, it takes about 20 minutes to load, then I continue with about 8 FPS.

Certainly, something is wrong. Any ideas?

It should run pretty smooth with your setup. Do you have the latest patch for the game and the latest video card drivers? If so, try dropping the resolution a few notches and see what happens. The game doesnt look fantastic like Crysis, but it still has a lot of physics stuff going on that stresses your GPU.

latest patch: Yes. Steam ensures this.
latest drivers: Yes. Chipset and video card drivers are all up to date.
Resolution: It does run a little better at 800x600, but it's still unplayable.

Side note: I can play Crysis with decent settings at 1680x1050 perfectly playable. Team Fortress 2 at high (not max) settings runs at a solid 60 FPS (VSYNC) at 1680x1050. Quake 4 (now installed again) at COMPLETE MAX SETTINGS (remember, same engine as ET:QW) runs at a solid 60 FPS.

:'(

edit: Yes I do have a second monitor enabled. Do I seriously have to disable the monitor every time I want to play? Uhg... let me try it, brb.

edit 2: well... i'll check it out tomorrow. Looks like I need to reinstall the demo (re-download) so I'll just check back when I'm not dead tired. Thanks for both of your help so far :)

Yes, for OpenGL games at least.
