KENT CITY -- A stray kitten whose ears were cut off is being treated at the Humane Society of Kent County for that injury and others after the 3-month-old animal recently was found near M-37 and Peach Ridge Avenue.

The kitten is the victim of "shocking" animal cruelty, humane society officials said today.

In addition to the severed ears, the kitten -- nicknamed "Eeyore" by Humane Society workers -- suffered a hernia from being hit or kicked and a nose injury, said Dr. Wendy Swift, the facility's medical veterinary director.

"We could tell by the injury that this was done intentionally with some kind of sharp blade," Swift said.

Karen Terpstra, the society's director, said authorities are hoping to identify a suspect in the cruelty case.

The kitten was found Dec. 19 and brought to the animal welfare group for treatment that has included surgery and medication.

Way off topic, and I am not going to clean it up. It's locked.

sickening and i find it quite ironic that several purebred dogs have their ears and tails cut off and no one seems to care.

Was thinking the same thing; it's not inherently cruel to cut off an animal's ears if it's done properly.

Of course, this just goes further to the double standard between dogs and cats.

Cat: "Don't cut the ears off, it's cruel. Let it roam around all night and claw at your car if it wants to, cats roam naturally."

Dog: "Floppy ears and a long tail? Cut that stuff off, man. If you take that thing out of your yard, it better be on a leash and you better pick the dogpies up OR ELSE."

Cat owners make me sick.

The cruelty part stems from the fact that the perp apparently cut the ears off, hit or kicked the kitten a few times, then left it to die. When you cup a dogs ears and/or tail, you use antiseptic tools, bandage the wounds, and don't abandon the animal.

The article doesn't clearly state that the ear docking and the beating of the kitten were done at the same time, but irregardless docking the ears of an animal isn't cruel.

And if you believe that dog farms use anything more than a sharp blade and a bandage, I've got a piece of oceanfront property to sell you...

You're a dumbass. Perhaps you should STFU before you shove your foot so far down your throat that you can't get it out. :|

Cat looks pretty streamlined, although I doubt that was the motivation for the future serial killer who committed this barbaric act.

What's a matter? Don't like what I say? Grow a set, and make a point. At least I outlined specific reasons why I feel the way I do about the issue. Your post made about as much sense as dmcowen674's do.

Cutting off the ears of dogs or cats is wrong...and yes, I own both.

Cats are different than dogs. Cats are hunters and nocturnal by nature. To apply the same rules to cats as you do to dogs shows how very little you know about them. Unless a cat is raised strictly indoors you really can't expect one to be kept inside exclusively and you sure as hell can't leash most cats.

No, I don't like what you say. You make me sick.

Well frankly I don't care what a cat wants. We, as a society, place humans above their pets. Cats roam, and cats damage things. Just because a cat is "happier" roaming doesn't mean that we should allow it to do so.

Pit bulls like to eat children by nature. I don't import small Vietnamese children to feed it though, do I?

Or a less inflammatory example: My dog would love to eat a bag of choclate Hershey's kisses. I know that chocolate will kill my dog, so I don't give it to him. The dog doesn't understand that, he just knows that it smells good, so it must taste good.

Since animals have no reasoning skills, it is up to us to reason for them and do what is best for them, not just to do what makes them happy.

And yes, docking ears has a sound medical basis coming from someone who owned a Giant Schnauzer with undocked ears. Certain animals, especially larger ones that are more prone to ear mite infections, need to have their ears docked so they don't flap. Failure to do so will cause subdermal hematomas later in life requiring partial or total amputation of the ear flap. And yes, I've been there and I've got the vet bill to prove it.

Cutting the ears off a kitten is cruel. The person who did this should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Oh, and I will continue to let my cat roam the neighborhood but not my dog. The cat is fixed, she doesn't damage anyone's property and she's very friendly.

i've picked enough cat turds out of my mom's back patio to prove otherwise.
