I posted this in P&N but I know that a lot of you don't venture much there. Just thought that it would get more humorous comments here while we/they can battle it out over there.

Enjoy

Has HS level math or reading changed much in the last 20 years?

Math has changed. Many highschools are putting in more advanced math.

Reading for the most part hasn't changed. Sure, you can add in a new author or two into a class, but it really doesn't change.

And this really does belong just in P&N. Although I'm not going to dare post in that thread. Absinence ONLY education has never been shown to work for anything other than satisfying the religious right.

yes, it has degraded. Normal students just cant handle doing any sort of math without a calculator in grade school.

I guess the moral to the story is if you're looking for young girls that will be guaranteed to "put out", you should go to Ohio....at least until the new curriculum is taught.

I think it's sad to see so many young girls make bad decisions at a young age and get stuck with the consequences. It's hard enough to make it through college and start a career these days...to do it with a child would be almost impossible without parental support.

Most of the HS math classes I took required a TI82, 83, or 86 calculator, and were used in almost every chapter. Even the recent college course I took, required a calculator, even spending an entire chapter on how to use a calculator. 😛

As far as reading goes though, I only wish they'd replace some books on the required reading list. The play 'Our Town' and novel 'A Separate Peace' are two of the worst pieces of text I've ever had to read. Utter trash.

is preaching sluttiness ok?

Sure. Ever shop in the female's section of a clothing store? Its okay for girls as young as 2 to dress in ultra short shorts and skimpy tube tops.

It isn't explicitly stated that they were teaching an "abstinence only" approach, but that is implied in the article. It sounds like that Ohio school board has just woken up to reality, and is gearing up to meet the challenge, so good for them.

A Separate Peace was horrible; I had to read that back in high school (early 1980's). The Scarlet Letter is another example of vomit that's passed off as "literature" that we had to read.

No you addle minded idiot but educating the young is paramount to them making wise decisions.

Actually, in my physics class, I use textbooks that are over 20 years old. Or rather, I have those textbooks available to the students if they want to browse through them. The majority of what they've learned is stuff from several hundred years ago. I highly supplement the course with handouts, and a lot of their learning is hands-on. Besides, as a former student, I tend to remember that even when reading was assigned, the teacher went over everything anyway - why? Because half the class never read the assignments.

No, but teaching safer sex practices might be a good idea. The slutty teenagers of the world are going to have sex anyway, so you might as well make sure that they take the right steps not to pregnant or infected with an STD.

for a school project, a friend of mine filmed some scenes from that book, including the one where finny falls down the flight of stairs at the end. in that scene, he yells, 'fvck.' for the video, my friend yelled, 'fudge.' still, the teacher gave him a C for yelling 'fvck.' appeals from his parents to both the teacher and the principal were of no use.
