I'm selling my current rig at a good price, and replacing the whole darned thing.
Over the weekend. :Q

This seems to be a bad time to do it though, since nForce is still months away - the 735 is just coming out and still not available, the 760's are just beginning to fall under some kind of attack because of the 686B southbridge(north?)[shrug].

So I'm going to go without a PC for about a month!!

What do you expect to be fully available by that time?
You expect a rise or drop in RAM prices? (I might buy the RAM while it's so cheap, and a 19" monitor for only $250 Canadian.) ;) The rest I'll hold off on unless nothing is going to be a GREAT deal better than the pretty-darned-stable KT or KM133A.

The other alternative is to get the KM133A ProSavage uATX board with regular PC-133 and just enjoy it for a good long time. :D I don't need screaming video anyways since I'm no longer a big gamer. I'd rather have lots of good memory, a good hard drive, and a zippy processor. (Notice I never said "the best" since I know it's not my price range. I believe in BUDGET systems!)

So... what advice do you have? I only have this baby another day or two before it's gone along with my 'net connection!

Why are you losing your net connection?

Fool, find yourself a classic Pentium system, load Win95 on it, and hook up the 'net. Duh.

Well, I do have a 486... I'm not about to spend money on a system just to have to go through trying to sell it again. Ugh.... I'd rather just find an ISA modem for my old beast - even 28.8!
Strictly forums and email. ;)

You can do the forums and Email on a calculator watch if you put time into it. I'm sure there's something you can whip up in 10 minutes that will keep you in contact.

<< the 760's are just beginning to fall under some kind of attack because of the 686B southbridge(north?)[shrug]. >>

That would be south.

The northbridge is the Memory, AGP and CPU interface chip, and basically determines the performance of the board.
That's the AMD761.

All mobo makers that I know of chose to use the Via 686B southbridge over the AMD766 because the 686B is cheaper. The southbridge is just the I/O controller and really has very little impact on performance...so in that sense it doesn't matter.

But the 686B has had many many problems. It seems most of them are resolved with the newest 4in1 drivers (I had some problems recently, but that turned out to be my beta TV-wonder drivers not liking DX7 (I upped to DX8 and it seems fine)....now we'll see if my hollywood plus behaves itself...but I think that was a lack of DMA on my DVDROM...we'll see...) but I'm still leary of the chip becuase of the amount of problems on it in the past...

I wish there was a true AMD760 (761 North + 766 South), but there isn't...it's all hybrid. Same performance, less cost...but question stability/compatibility.....

<< So I'm going to go without a PC for about a month!! >>

That is a horrifying thought ;)

No PC for a month?
It would be hard but I could do it.

Heh I went 2 months without sounds (no funds to buy a new card, saved up for Santa Cruz :) )
but I did have a laptop to play mp3s, etc... so it wasn't so bad

Any other suggestions, folks? Is it worthwhile? Will the SiS 735 be in full production by then? Wait a tiny bit longer and get the first nForce to roll out? (TWO months with no PC?? AUGH!)

I'm sure you guys can understand my hesitation to that decision - but then most of you have more money to spend and would simply buy stuff now, then new stuff in three months. I can't do that. :)

why you want the nforce so bad ? is it worth to wait for 2 (or more) months to get something you haven't even seen (performance/stability/cost wise). If you're not a gamer (as you stated) then there is no need for nforce in 2 months, right ? ok, it might be the best combo in the near future future, but it might not. If I were you I wouldn't sell your old hardware now. I would stick with it 'til nforce comes out and wait for reviews, and if it's really good, then invest some money and buy one. It's better than sell your stuff now, buy another computer (or stay 2 months without a computer at all) and buy another one 3 months later.

but that's my opinion, of course.

The guy needs the computer now - the sale is happening. That's how it goes. ;)

You make an excellent point - if I'm not supposed to be concerned about gaming, why worry about the nForce at all? My idea of going with the KM133A (with internal Savage4) may be just what the doctor ordered. It's also pretty cheap and no video card cost incursion... That extra dough can be sunk into an awesome processor and silent fans. Or just saved for a rainy day. :D
Hopefully my nVidia rep won't let me down... I *should* be able to get a review board.... I hope. [crossing fingers - praying]

I say if that 486 isn't ready to get on the web, then a budget machine now is probably your best answer. Sock the saved money away for a while and keep adding to it until you can buy your dream machine (nForce or whatever). Just my opinion. ;) BTW, I'd have a hard time going without two machines at home right now. lol

Unless I was on vacation, and I mean a serious vacation with lots to do, 24 hours a day, I'd go absolutely nuts. I sit in front of a pc for about 6 hours of my 9 hour workday, then go home and play on my pc. It's become such a big part of my life...I have been assimilated. :Q

Maybe he can be on that Fear Factor show.

Some people get thrown off a cliff or in a box with Mice, some faithful AT'ers have to go a month without using their PC. Oh the horror.

My computer was stolen last September. I couldn't get it replaced until February! I honestly didn't think I was going to be able to stand it. I actually had to break out the ol' social skills and have fun with people. :D

Therefore, it'll probably be good for you. :p

Then again, I have three computers now and spend almost all of my free time on them (is there a such thing as computer withdrawl?).

Okay - moment of truth! The computer is being sold as I type. This is possibly goodbye for an indefinate period of time.

Wish me luck connecting with a 486 and 33.6 Sportster. ;) Might even have to use AOL Canada...

GOODBYE FOR NOW!!
