Absolutely stumped between these two processors for my new laptop

they are both 2.4Ghz, 3mb of L2 cache, socket P, 45nm.
The 25W chip is 30 bucks less and also has a FSB of 1066 as opposed to 800 on the 35W chip

I've asked this question before but really didn't get much of an answer. I searched a crapload of other message boards and other places and still cant get a definite answer about these processors.

So many conflicting opinions:
Some say that the 35W chip will use less battery and some say the 25W will. The theory for the 35 being more efficient, is that 35 is its max and it doesn't have to work as hard as the 25W chip. This might seem right because the 35W chip costs more so this could be why?

Then some places ive heard that "the 25W has the same specs as the 35W and uses less power so buy that" They also say that the P series is newer and should cost more which isnt correct.

Ive also heard that the P series needs different memory or something like that because of the bus speeds? I cant see this being true because the memory can just run in asynchronous mode.

SO i need to order these soon and i want to make sure i dont get the wrong one.

1. Which processor will perform better in video games and such
2. Which processor will get better battery life
3. Do i need any special memory and will either of these fit my new notebook http://www.msicomputer.com/NB/....asp?model=MS-1651-ID2

heres a side by side comparison: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...1002%2CN82E16819111009

please help me decide!!!!

I can't understand how a lower wattage chip would use more power, doesn't make sense to me. The 25W will generate less heat and therefore, in my opinion, use less power. That notebook may allow overclocking which will bode well for the 25W chip also. The PM45 chipset will handle both 800 and 1066FSB chips and allows the memory to run asynchronous.

1. I believe the P8600 would be the better chip due to lower thermals, faster bus.
2. P8600 Should have better battery life, lower power draw.
3. Both are socket P 45nm so either will work in the MSI-1651. Memory? good DDR2-800 such as GSkill, OCZ, Mushkin etc.

1). Equal
2). 25W chip, of course, By about 30-40 minutes depending on how large the battery is.
3). SODIMM DDR2 Memory is fine. No special memory needed other than standard laptop memory.

My guess would be it is cheaper because you need to pair with DDR-2 1066 RAM (which costs more) to run it at full speed.

He's right, I just bought a 2 GB Kingston DDR2-533 SODIMM for my Lenovo T60 (for $25 with free shipping! tho it did take two weeks to get here) and it runs perfectly. Unit's a little zippier, too. Strongly recommend maxing out memory since it's so darn cheap. Buying faster RAM for a laptop is a waste.

alright guys thanks for straightening that out. I just couldnt understand why the 25W chip was cheaper. even weirder though, the prices on all the other P series CPU's are higher than the same speed T series. For some reason 2.4GHZ is the exception.

One thing I found out is that the P8600 (the cheaper one) was released in June 2008 at $241, while the T8300 was released in January 2008 but at the exact same $241 price (these figures are from Wikipedia).

I'm guessing that because Intel released the two CPUs at the exact same prices that the P8600 was intended to replace the T8300. They may have discontinued the T8300 and now NewEgg is getting rid of old stock and hasn't updated the price. Meanwhile, the P8600 is still being produced and thus it's receiving price drops in line with other currently-manufactured Intel CPUs. That's just my theory, though.

EDIT: Or maybe it's just NewEgg's wonky price calculator going cuckoo as it sometimes does (a couple weeks ago the Phenom II 920 was only $2 cheaper than the 940).

The P series is alot better on battery juice at least when comparing biz optioned T400's and x200's in my enviro. And by at least 30mins

A few weeks ago, new P8600's couldn't be found for less than $240-250. The lower price is a recent thing.
