Howdy,

After extensive quest to find the perfect dvd-rom, I now am on the brink of giving it all up.
Plz help me..

I'm after a quiet dvd-rom. I know about progies that can fix the speed..but I want a drive that is quiet by its nature...
Here are some of my requirement..

1. Very quiet operation, especially when watching dvd and divx
2. There is software solution to reduce the operating speed just in case.
3. Can read subchannel data and backup dvd
4. Region unlockable.
5. Tray loading.
6. 16x speed..

Can someone help me out?

Very Quiet is hard to archive, unless u build a custom case for the DVD-ROM, as for the rest of the requirements, go for a Pioneer newest tray loading drive and hack it.

Hope this helps :)

I have a pioneer 106/s (slot load 16x/40x) and you can download a utility to run it in "quiet" mode or in "performance" (full speed) mode.

I can fetch the utility link for you if you need it

Floydian, I'd like that utility too. Does it work for the 104s aswell?

My Toshiba 16x DVDROM drive is quiet, but not very quiet. Maybe medium loudness. You could make it quiet by wrapping the drive in some sort of foam, and cover the front of the drive with foam also. That should absorb most of the noise.

well.......... nobody sells toshiba here in australia..so it's out of the question.. :(
I'm lil bit worried about heat for the wrapping with foam idea..

I have two Toshibas, both very quiet.

I also have a 16x LG and it it just as quiet...I assume you mean while playing a DVD or CD...copying large files or playing games just about any drive will be nominaly noisy, but for movies and audio its almost silent.

I don't know if the region is unlockable or not though.
