Absolute fastest IDE hard drive???

I am planning on picking up a few drives for a RAID setup. I know that the fastest has been the 75GXP, but there are some new drives that have come out, aswell as ATA/133, and IBM has also came out with a 120GXP drive.

I want the fastest possible and wondered what you guys have to say on what that is.

For RAID the best seems to be the new WDs with 8MB cache.

<< I know that the fastest has been the 75GXP >>

I believe the fastest were the 60 GXPs...notice "were"

The fastest desktop performance of any IDE drive is from the WD1200JB - for more information, go read the reviews and comparisons on storagereview.com. Although the IBM is no slouch (and if server performance is what you want, the IBM or the Maxtor 740 are probably more up your alley), the WD is king for desktop applications.

Thanks! That site is exactly what I needed. This setup will be for a home user setup, so looks like the WD drive takes the crown in that.

I have been wondering about hose WD drives with the 8meg cache...they must scream in a RAID 0 setup!

hmm.but it looks like I'd have to fork it out for a 100gb+ HDD, not to mention, multiple ones for a RAID setup...seems those are the only ones that sport the 8meg buffer.

I'd have to vote for the 8mb buffer Special Edition drives, but they are too pricey for a lot of people.

I think the 120GXP is the king of the heap right now, but the Maxtor D740X isn't far behind but has ATA-133.

The drive is impressive, this thing can be as speed as a RAID 0 setup with some of the other 7200 drives, assumming that RAID isnt nearly 100% effecient, to say, that 2 drives aren't 2x as fast as one.

The 120GXP is IBM's fastest IDE HDD. I couple of 40 or 80's in raid0 would be mighty nice.

The WD1200JB is WD's fastest IDE HDD, and beats the IBM in some benchmarks. However, a pair of those drives will set you back a pretty penny. Check storagereview.com for more info.

Well with the deal's going on at the Hot Deals forum right now, that 100 GB Western Digital isn't that much more expensive than some of the 120GXP's
