So i want to backup my entire DVD collection to the new server im going to be building. I cant seem to find a DVD ripper that does what i want it to, i tried wondershare but it takes an absurdly long time (150+ hours for paranormal activity 2) and WinX DVD ripper isnt using my entire CPU, so im getting like 15% usage. I want a DBVD ripper that can do it quickly (preferably on my 9800GTX so i can still game while its ripping, and effeciently. I used a DVD decodeer and it turned 7gb into 52. Anyone have anything that fits teh bill? Price is of no matter.

DVD Decrypter.

Sounds like you are re-encoding DVDs and you don't need to waste time on that. Just rip to .iso and forget about it.

Is .ISO a 1:1 conversion? Ive ripped games to iso but DVD's are different. I would prefer to have just an .avi instead of an .iso because its more compressed and easier to play.

I used DVD decrypter, its hat turned 7 into 52.

I use Handbrake. Supports MP4 and MKV X264. Also, AVI DivX is old technology, encoding to X264 gives you a significantly smaller file size without any loss in quality.

Details

HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder, available for MacOS X, Linux and Windows.

Use Fairuse Wizard. I been using ver 2 for years. It produces video at much better quality than anything else I've ever tried. I use the xvid codec. It absolutely demolishes h264. I have several full length movies that are just 400MB in size and they look great. I even have some 150MB hour long tv shows that look good. The audio is always in sync. The only problem is that some dvds dont work. For them, I use anydvd and dvdfab to convert the dvd to an iso, then use fairuse wizard to recode the iso. I just install the trialware when I need those programs.

The lite version of fairuse wizard limits you to 700MB. The only time you need more than 700MB is for movies like Avatar and Transformers. For those movies I use fairuse wizard 2.8 full, google it. It was a special version that had no restrictions.

I use CloneDVD with AnyDVD, it's expensive but work 100% of the time.

BTW, I just started on a similar quest. I'm moving 100% of my DVD stock to ISO...i have a bout 200 to go.

I'm still not sure about ISO versus VOB, but I figured this was a simple first step and XBMC will play ISO, so it works for my appleTV setup. When I move to an HTPC setup with MyMovies, I might decide to move it all to VOB, but I'm not worrying about that yet.
