Only illegal if brewed from Wormwood, which is what gives it the hallucinagenic(sp?) effect due to it being poisonness to humans. There are some places to buy wormwood free absinthe in the USA. I know one of the liquor stores at Purdue University in Indiana had it 3 years ago or so.

My wife keeps getting customs letters ever since a friend in Amsterdam attempted to send her a bottle of Absinthe.

The box arrived (lightened of course) with green security tape around it with "Homeland Security" markings.

That was an interesting morning

So yeah, Absinthe is the #1 (along with Cuban cigars which I believe is #2) item seized by customs each year.

Its only illegl to sell in US, not to consume. I was in europe couple days weeks ago. I brought a bottle. Had some friends there and had some shots of someof that green stuff.
Even thought its 68%(the one i have) it didnt feel like a lot. But had a good feeling taking it in. It doesnt hit you immediately. we had 3-5 shots each and were good to go.
You can actually buy it online from europe. They ship it direct.

I had some at a indie sorta bar...it tastes like black licorice...well so long as they mix it with a sugar cube up proper. I didn't have the wormwood variety though, but the "Americanized" version was pretty damn potent. Me and my female friend split a cup and it had about the potency of a double shot of tequila. Whatever i got caused some interesting side effects not like drunkenness thoguh too, like lights twinkling and got extra numb.

it has hallucinogen in it. which is one of the reasons it against the law to sale it. I doubt very much you friend has ever had it.

the psychoactive properties of absinthe are greatly debated.

as far as taste. no... it does not taste good at all. and i love jagermeister even. most absinthe i've had is EXTREMELY bitter. bitter enough it makes your mouth want to stop working and just spit it out. it's extremely weird.

in general though... most absinthe brews i've seen just get you drunk more than anything. they have an extremely high alcohol content which tends to override whatever subtle hallucinogenic properties wormwood/thujone may or may not have.

also... if you want to get an idea of what it tastes like, look for Pernod. it's basically an absinthe brew without the wormwood in it.

edit:also... if you are looking to trip... don't think of thujone/wormwood as a good way to go about it. i've read reports of kids trying to drink wormwood extract before... with horrid results. kidney failure is something everyone can do without.
