Above 850/900mhz... what do you see?

Alright guys Im a computer salesman/former tech, my tech days were great but I really love the salesfloor but heres the thing, Where I work at we are not on commision, we just get paid hella hourly wages 😉, but besides that, like I said were not on commision so I honestly am there to make the customer happy, I see guys come in all the damn time wanting the 1ghz machine which is great yadda yadda, but heres the thing does Joe Schmoe really notice the different between 850/900mhz and 1ghz? I mean even if he is using 3d graphics/gaming, they throw in a crappy 16mb VGA card, so I try to help out Joe Schmoe by going "Hey Pal save some money, go with an 850/900 Athlon T-Bird with a decent video card!" which always comes out cheaper. Am I correct on the fact that 850/900mhz is about the peak of performance until some bottlenecks within the CPU/memory themselves are cleared up?

Yes, that makes sense. There's no point in buying the most expensive processor you can get your hands on if you're going to stick in some obsolete video card.

I'd rather have a 700MHz CPU with a top of the line video card, instead of a 1000MHz CPU and a Banshee. You sound like a 'good' salesman... I hate the ones that don't have the slightest clue what they're talking about (the ones around here... don't even know what an ATA66 controller is).

well if you're talking about an average "joe schmoe", he wouldn't even need an 850/900. most people would be fine with, say, a 600 or 700.

Hmm ... I am not yet in the lucky position to have a Duron, but anyway, what happens if you accidently connect two of those bridges with each other? Good bye CPU or simply still locked or crash during POST?I mean instead of connecting : : : : to | | | | (which is correct), : : : : to |-| | | or something alike. Er. I hope you get the point 🙂

Edit: ACK, wrong thread.

To be a little bit more on-topic, I absolutely agree. There's no denying that getting a very fasat CPU while keeping an old graphics gard is a waste.
Looking at www6.tomshardware.com/column/00q3/000903/bb-05.html makes this quite obvious:
"As the chart above clearly shows, at high resolutions even the impotent Cyrix MII 433 performs at the same level as the much more powerful K6-III. Only as resolutions decrease does the respective power of the CPUs become evident.
What is ironic is that if a gamer only wants the most detail and highest resolutions in demanding 3D games, then even the cheapest CPU platforms will suffice - especially those budget chips available today."

I am in the same boat as you BlackDragon. I work in a business that sells computers. I try to tell people that you don't want Celly cause of performance. You want around 700-800 for cost reasons and a "good" video card for gameplay, i.e. a 32 GF2 GTS is ideal. Gives em that breath-taking awe of seeing their computer run 3dMark2000. I try to demonstrate that program on an integrated el-cheapo celeron system to convince them that I am telling the truth. They usually go for a 700 Athlon because of the price. The 800 is a little noticeable, but I don't think they would trully put even that much processing power to good use.

It works on 19 out 20 people. I always seem to get that one guy who will upgrade later and save a little money now.

yeah, the "average joe" could get away w/ a 500mhz process possibly. But the average joe gamer, more like 700.

But when you work at best buy and tell ppl that, the managers sometimes don't really like that... dumb flucks.

Thanks guys for your responses! Also I mean even with a decent VGA you look at a lot of the benchmarks I mean the difference between 850 T-Bird and 1gz T-Bird is a step up but not by much considering the factor of the price also. Yes I do work at best buy, I know a lot of you guys are going "Oh my god NOO!" well I been top sales there for 4 months in a row and only employed for 4 months lol, trust me I just got my raise (salary) and I'm looking at a brand new Firebird Trans Am or Honda Prelude type 2 SH, I might be sticking with Best Buy for awhile. The reason why I ask these questions is I can honestly say I am there to help the customer, I want to give them the lowest price for there performance I want to know where to skim exactly, being a former tech that gives me an edge on some of our "not-so-experienced" sales people, trust me I cursed Best Buy in my tech days and now wear the blue so I know where you guys come from, we got those guys all over the nation but let it be known that I am trying to make a difference. Once again any feedback on this post is much appreciated restated question: Even with a decent VGA, the difference between 800/900mhz to say 1ghz is not that much noticable considering the price factor correct? Thanks guys! and By the way RAMBUS IS SUCK!

<< Yes I do work at best buy >>

Do you know GUTB? 😛

<< we just get paid hella hourly wages >>

Define "hella"....I don't know of many salesmen at BB that make a decent wage.

No I dont know GUTB, and normal sales people well they dont make good wages however I have college background department sup, I could've been general manager of the store decided to stay in CPU's only been there for 4 months, however I'm not paid hour I'm a college graduate in comp science and Business Technology at NDSU (Go BISON!) so trust me Best Buy will pay the people they want very well...btw I did buy a 2001 Firebird Trans AM 😉
