Ok, so i know an S-Video cable cant carry sound,

but if im using a video card (like the 7800GTX) that supports VIVO, and i play movies from my vcr to my computer (to burn dvd's) will there be sound?
if so, how?

What about this capture card

will that also capture the sound from the videos?
again, how?

thanks

you are correct, s-video will not carry sound. if im correct, you need something like this to carry sound from your vcr to your computer.

The SVideo cable does not carry the sound signal. This goes into the computer's Line-In jack, and will be recorded through the sound unit.

PCI TV cards mostly have a dedicated line-in jack to be used with a Composite or SVideo input.

Getting video and audio synchronized properly is easier with the latter solution, but far from impossible when teaming the video-in on the graphics card with the computer's sound unit.

so basically i should just get a cheap PCI card (like the one i listed) to make capturing video easier then using VIVO?

Capturing audio along with video will be easier to sync, that's all. Why not attempt this with the hardware you have, and THEN buy something better if it doesn't do a satisfactory job? After all you got video and audio capture hardware right there already.

Besides, $1.50 more buys you a full blown PCI TV card from the same maker that still has SVideo and audio inputs as well.

Oh, and he should probably get one with female RCA ends if he gets something like this instead of male ends so he can hook up some regular RCA cables.

yea, the new PCI card im getting has those same exact ones, so i can easily hook up a VCR (via the RCA jacks) and get both video and sound
