I have a dead hitachi 250gb drive and a second working hitachi 250gb drive I bought a few months later (both 2+ yrs old). Ironically the dead drive died while I was dumping its contents to my newly built (well really just my old pc with lots of hard drives added) windows home server, which has enough space to duplicate everything, thus protecting me from drive failures.
I'm going to try swapping the working hitachi's board onto the dead drive. Is there anything I need to know? I know the drives should have the same firmware, but I have no idea if the drives have the same firmware and have no idea how to find out because the dead drive isn't recognized anymore. Is there anything more to it than a few screws and a little ribbon cable?
